The frame becomes an optical instrument

In New York, LINDBERG is not simply showing eyewear in an artistic setting. The Maison entrusts Fabrizio Corneli with the very function of the Object: producing an image through light. With Enigma of Vision, unveiled on 24 September 2026 during The Armory Show, eyewear literally becomes a projection instrument.

The Italian artist has long worked with shadow and light as materials. For this installation, he has composed two complementary works, Seed and Eyecatcher. In the first, a concealed light source brings out a representation of the planet. In the second, light passes through a selection of LINDBERG frames and projects their silhouettes as sculptural shadows.

The shift is subtle. A frame is normally designed to organise the gaze: it holds the lenses, fades from notice on the face and accompanies vision. Here, it becomes the very condition of an image. What is usually peripheral to the visual field moves to the centre of the scene.

This proposal is consistent with the history of LINDBERG, founded in Denmark in 1986 and known for an architectural approach to eyewear, lightweight constructions and an engineering that seeks to reduce superfluous elements. But the editorial interest does not lie in repeating the Maison’s minimalist vocabulary. It lies in seeing how this culture of structure can produce something other than a worn Object.

In Eyecatcher, the frame is no longer judged only by its weight, its hinge or its geometry. Its profile becomes graphic material. The temples and rims, crossed by a light source, acquire a scale and a presence they never have on the face. Corneli thus uses industrial design as the matrix of an ephemeral work.

The context of The Armory Show also matters. Rather than setting up a parallel activation in a boutique or showroom, LINDBERG places the project in a fair where legitimacy comes first from the artistic proposal. This proximity between design, art and industry is not new, but it becomes more convincing when the Object does not merely serve as a support for a signature: it takes material part in the artist’s language.

Enigma of Vision will be presented at the Javits Center in New York. The project raises a simple question for the Maisons investing in the cultural field: does a collaboration become more interesting when it agrees to lose its commercial function for a moment? In LINDBERG’s case, the frame ceases for an instant to frame the gaze and instead produces what the gaze will be able to see.
