The Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, located in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, will reopen on May 25, 2023 after a complete transformation that highlights Mayan culture. This event will mark the first major transformation of Belmond’s portfolio in North America, under the aegis of LVMH. The new version of the Maroma will include 10 new oceanfront suites, a nature-focused wellness experience in partnership with Guerlain, groundbreaking sustainability initiatives and a new gastronomic era under the direction of Mexican-born executive chef Daniel Camacho.
The complete renovation of the hotel was entrusted to renowned international designer Tara Bernerd, who worked hand-in-hand with local artisans to pay homage to Mexican heritage. By combining contemporary craftsmanship with carefully selected local materials, the team aims to create timeless, authentic spaces and channel the healing energy of the place. The property’s original design and architecture have been preserved, including the white stucco buildings aligned with the sacred geometry of Mayan masonry. Curved lines and organic shapes inspired by the property’s wild surroundings create a harmonious flow between the interior and exterior of rooms, suites and villas. This exceptional seaside resort offers 72 accommodations spread across Maroma’s private sand strip, three quarters of which now overlook the ocean, including a spacious new oceanfront suite with private pool and garden. The property’s three pools have been completely redesigned and adorned with Sukabumi tiles handcrafted from volcanic stone, in the same vibrant turquoise tones as the region’s many natural cenotes.
AN INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED WELLNESS DESTINATION
Based on the principles of nature and vitality , well-being at Maroma takes on a new dimension with the launch of the first Guerlain spa in Latin America. Guests can enjoy the vital flow of healing energies from the nearby jungle and ocean in the newly renovated biophilic space. In this deeply spiritual temple to relaxation, treatment rooms overlook the jungle, while local design elements are incorporated into geometric shapes and handcrafted objects. Healing rituals are born from the power of nature, ancient practices and thesacred Melipona bee, revered by the Mayans for over 3,000 years as a symbol of spiritual resonance. Inspired by the theme of balance and harmony, Guerlain will unveil a unique spa program, integrating its iconic face and body treatments with exclusive experiences designed around the Mayan philosophy of well-being, sounds and healing rituals. A true holistic wellness retreat, featuring a selection of daily meditation, movement and yoga workshops to resynchronize body, mind and soul.
A COLORFUL AND CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN
At the Casa Mayor restaurant, Mexican-born Executive Chef Daniel Camacho will continue his legacy, celebrating his country’s incredible culinary diversity. In a sustainable selection process, 90% of the ingredients cooked will come from Mexico and almost half from the Yucatán peninsula. The restaurant is a proud member of #PescaConFuturo, which promotes sustainable fishing and aquaculture. Freshly caught seafood will be sourced from Amigos de Sian Ka’an. Reinventing traditional Mexican cuisine, the menu of colorful dishes will include seafood towers and corundas from Michoacan, Birria in Jalisco style and chocolate cake with black mole from Oaxaca, all washed down with house mezcal.
For the perfect aperitif, Bambuco offers a more relaxed atmosphere, where seasonal drinks based on plants freshly picked from the garden sit alongside Mexican wines, tequila-based cocktails and a wide selection of Mezcal.
The legendary Freddy’s Bar, a meeting place on the beach, will remain true to the enthusiastic spirit of the Riviera Maya, with its live music, DJs, fresh seafood and cocktails.
BIODIVERSITY: IT ALL STARTS WITH A BEE
Maroma has a long history of working with local organizations and will continue its collaboration with Fundación Selva Maya and Mayahuum to protect the Melipona bee. This endangered species is of fundamental importance for the ecology of the Yucatan Peninsula. To take this commitment even further, a new partnership with Guerlain, the originator of a project bold in its vision and revolutionary in its scope, will reinforce it. Combining a long tradition of care, research and community programs, the collaboration will see the expansion of resident beehives, the inauguration of a new Melipona sanctuary for educational experiences, and the roll-out of Guerlain’s Bee School and “Women for Bees” initiatives in Yucatán communities. Melipona honey and other types of honey will form part of the wellness experience and feature on culinary and mixology menus. Respect for the environment is an essential part of the Maroma experience. Other initiatives, such as turtle conservation and the preservation of local flora and fauna, will also be included in the guests’ program.
FOTOGRAFIA MAROMA: A LIVING GALLERY OF MEXICAN TALENT
With its rich culture, storytelling traditions and spectacular natural landscapes, the Riviera Maya is fertile ground for artistic expression and development. Maroma will further celebrate local artists with Fotografia Maroma, a multifaceted creative concept developed in partnership with curators Fariba Farshad (co-founder and director of Photo London) and Patricia Conde (founder of Patricia Conde Galeria in Mexico City and the annual Proyectosjuancano68 exhibition). In collaboration with Belmond, the curators have selected four Mexican photographers to take part in this inaugural series: renowned photographers Patricia Lagarde, Javier Hinojosa and Ilán Rabchinskey, and young talent Margot Kalach. These works, which capture the Riviera Maya through the singular lenses and viewpoints of the photographers, are exhibited in turn at Art Basel in Miami, Zona Maco in Mexico City and Photo London.
