Celebrating 10 years of success
For 10 years, Guerlain Research has focused its studies on the exceptional repairing properties of honey and the science of skin repair mechanisms, to help combat the main signs of ageing such as wrinkles and sagging.
In its quest for effective natural raw materials, Guerlain Research has been interested in and inspired by bee products. Nature’s great alchemists, bees produce some of the world’s most effective healing substances. Honey has been used since ancient times to dress and heal wounds. Professor Descottes, Head of Visceral and Transplant Surgery at Limoges University Hospital, pioneered the use of honey’s healing power. Over a period of 25 years, he used honey dressings on more than 3,000 patients to heal their wounds.
Guerlain Research then focused on the micro-lesions of epidermal cells responsible for accelerated aging, to develop Generation 2 of this technology. Today, it is inspired by neuroscience. Stress, particularly that generated by environmental aggressions, overloads and disrupts the commu- nication between skin cells and cutaneous nerve cells. This process, known as neuro-aging, accentuates the signs of aging. By regulating this “over-regime”, 3rd generation BlackBee Repair technology promotes better skin self-repair and extends its regenerative capacities, for visibly younger-looking skin.
BLACKBEE REPAIR TECHNOLOGY, REPAIR BORN OF SCIENCE AND BEES
This experiment inspired Guerlain Research, led by Doctor Frédéric Bonté, Director of Guerlain Scientific Research, in collaboration with Professor Alexis Desmoulière, Professor of Physiology at the University of Limoges Faculty of Pharmacy and a specialist in tissue repair. The two researchers made a major discovery when they observed that there were certain mechanisms in common between the healing process and the repair of wrinkles and loss of firmness. Guerlain Research then demonstrated the efficacy of selected honeys on skin repair mechanisms and signs of aging. It gathered its knowledge to be able to prove the precise action of honey on skin repair. These results are at the origin of the Abeille Royale range and the evolution of its technologies over the years, the 1st generation of which acts on micro-tears, implicated in the origin of wrinkles and sagging.
HONEY INVESTIGATIONS AROUND THE WORLD
Guerlain Research will explore the secrets of bee products, their ancestral secrets, analyze their benefits, list their particularities and identify the purest qualities best suited to the skin’s needs. It highlights three criteria for honey selection: the richness and diversity of a preserved ecosystem, the purity of the environment and the genetics of the bee to obtain a uniquely effective honey. This colossal task guided the Guerlain team to specific ecosystems, including an island where the honey, with its original purity, possesses exceptional properties – an island unique in the world, a “treasure island”.
On the island of Ouessant, off the coast of Brittany, in one of the world’s best preserved ecosystems, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, reigns an endemic black bee. This small, stocky bee produces honey of remarkable quality and purity. Its richness in amino acids and fundamental trace elements are the secret of its power. This scientific approach on the part of the Guerlain team explains why Abeille Noire d’Ouessant honey, used in all Abeille Royale skincare products, has become Guerlain’s benchmark honey for bee products. To preserve this rare and particularly pure species of bee, Guerlain became the patron of the Conservatoire de l’Abeille Noire Bretonne association, in charge of the development and protection of this insect symbol of the House.
