After the shock announcement of Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest fashion show, we were all eagerly awaiting the Haute Couture house’s new concept.

Jean Paul Gaultier reassures us by announcing that Haute Couture continues, and will continue, with a new concept. Jean Paul Gaultier, who initiated this new project, will now invite a designer each season to reinterpret the House’s codes and give his or her vision of Haute Couture savoir-faire. SACAI’s Chitose Abe will be the first designer to be appointed artistic director of the next Haute Couture collection in July 2020.

“The reinterpretation of a Haute Couture brand by different designers is an idea I had in the 1990s for a Parisian House whose designer position was vacant. I’m delighted that the concept is now coming to life for Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture with Chitose Abe as our first guest. I admire her work. We have a lot in common creatively and a similar vision of fashion. I leave her free to interpret. – Jean Paul Gaultier

“I’ve long admired Jean Paul and his unique vision of subversive femininity, as well as his originality, both of which have been close to my heart since I started out. It’s a real honor to be the first designer invited to work on this exciting project, and to become the guardian of the House’s savoir-faire.” – Chitose Abe
