ISSEY MIYAKE SEMBA, the new ISSEY MIYAKE boutique in Osaka.
ISSEY MIYAKE SEMBA recently opened its doors in Osaka. The new boutique, created by Japanese designer Shingo Noma, showcases all ISSEY MIYAKE lines over an area of more than 800 m2. It is the only boutique in Western Japan to offer the public the opportunity to discover ISSEY MIYAKE’s own “Making Things” concept for each line.
Surrounded by the sea and surrounding rivers, Osaka is a city that grew up around water. Semba, the district in which the boutique is located, once thrived as an important sea crossing point. As a reminder of the region’s history, water was chosen as the common thread running through the design of the space. A work representing a tap, the symbol of the boutique, is installed on the façade. The store’s interior design picks up on the theme of water through a series of “omoroi” (playful) furnishings: racks in the shape of water pipes and armchairs reminiscent of bars of soap.
Step into the space and your inspiration will bubble up like water gushing from a spring, stimulating ideas that will guide every future creation.
ISSEY MIYAKE SEMBA wants to be seen as a space for creativity. In the basement of the boutique, a creative space is dedicated to exhibitions and special events. It brings together people, objects and ideas from Osaka and other regions to interact and create a new culture.
Shingo Noma
Graduated from the London College of Communication with an MA in Graphic Design. After working for several Japanese and foreign companies, he joined Taku Satoh Design Office Inc. in 2008. In 2017, he founded NOMA Design Office Inc. and is also art director of ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO’s KURA gallery. Shingo Noma has won several awards including the Tokyo ADC Award and the Tokyo ADC Creator’s Award. He is a full member of JAGDA (The Japan Graphic Designers Association) and a member of JAGDA’s International Council.
