Maison CAMUS is committed to saving the appellation in this long-forgotten region of the Perigord by launching a single-vineyard cognac from the last vineyards grown in the area.
For five generations, Maison CAMUS has been producing cognacs of incomparable aromatic quality. Drawing strength from its traditional know-how and expertise in innovation, CAMUS creates intensely aromatic cognacs. Following the launch of the Port Cask Finish, the first cognac to be finished in a port cask, Maison CAMUS continues to push back the traditional codes of the cognac industry, with the launch of the latest single-vintage cognac from Saint-Aulaye, in the Dordogne.
This new limited edition is made from grapes grown on plots in the village of Saint-Aulaye, one of the few communes still to benefit from the Cognac Appellation in this terroir. In a bid to preserve the Appellation after the disappearance of vines in the Dordogne region, the Saint-Aulaye town council acquired the planting rights, thus safeguarding this unique heritage.
In 2014, Maison CAMUS decided to join this mission by signing an exclusive collaboration agreement with the Mairie de Saint Aulaye, Dordogne. The wines are all distilled with their lees in small 2500-liter copper stills. The eau-de-vie is then aged in the traditional CAMUS style, in fine-grained oak barrels from the Double forest, containing little tannin to allow the cognac to develop subtle woody notes.
Following the region’s tradition, this eau-de-vie benefits from a second ageing in small 225-liter oak barrels that previously contained Monbazillac, in one of the towers of the Château de Saint-Aulaye, a historic monument in the region. Thanks to the reduced size of the barrels, the cognac benefits from a better interaction with the wood to reveal the smooth, unctuous notes characteristic of Monbazillac. This finish brings a great complexity of flavors and a beautiful golden yellow color with amber highlights. On the palate, aromas of dried fruit, sweet spices and orange peel explode, underlined by delicate notes of roasted coffee. This cognac is a “Small Batch” of only 3000 bottles per year,
individually numbered.
Limited edition of 3,000 numbered bottles per year available online or from the best wine merchants.
