With the arrival of summer TripAdvisor, the travel and booking site, highlights the top trends for the most popular tours and attractions with the greatest increase in traveler interest (based on bookings made since January 2016 to date), offering inspiration and highlighting incredible activities and tours that can be booked to make the most of any upcoming trip.
The Vatican and the film-cutters as star attractions
The Vatican is the destination with the most popular attractions. More than 4 million international tourists visited the papal city in 2016, due to the sacred religious Year of Mercy. With time at a premium during city breaks and long queues for the Vatican City’s main sights, insider travelers and connoisseurs have been looking to purchase ticketed tours online for the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Chapel and the Sistine Chapel, with 2 of these tours topping the list of the top 10 most-booked attractions in the world.
In France, the famous “French Cancan” at the Moulin Rouge is the most popular activity for tourists and locals alike, followed by the priority ticket for the visit of the Iron Lady and the “coupe-file” ticket for access to the summit.

To discover the main trends in guided tours and attractions, TripAdvisor has also analyzed the 50 most-booked tours since 2016, most of which are cut-files, day trips to see natural wonders and take multi-stop bus tours to explore popular destinations.
In terms of popularity on the destination side, the USA is the most represented destination with New York, Chicago and Las Vegas ranked among travelers’ favorite cities. Italy, France, the UK and Spain also ranked high when looking at the world’s most booked tours.

The trends and figures were determined by the number of bookings made in 2016 and 2017, as well as the number of new attractions uploaded to the TripAdvisor and Viator sites for the period January to March 2017.
