Magnum has unveiled three superb short films created by the winners of its “Be true to your pleasure” film competition, in collaboration with award-winning director Xavier Dolan.
“Be true to your pleasure” invited budding young filmmakers from top film schools around the world to present their film creations based on their conception of pleasure.
The three prizewinners received financial support and the patronage of director Xavier Dolan to help them realize their dreams. The three winning short films were selected from among hundreds for their unique and daring vision of pleasure, and the way they embody Magnum’s philosophy: “A day without pleasure is a day lost”:
– Kai, pleasure is letting go by Andrew Cummings: the main character is a contemporary dancer in search of perfection who trains relentlessly and is persecuted by her teacher. Everything changes when she finally manages to let go and feel joy.
– Wild Space, pleasure is following your heart by Kara Smith: a contemporary fable about a young man’s fight for true love. A fisherman spends months at sea before reuniting with his love, who had abandoned him for a domineering admiral.
– Zap, pleasure is ageless by Patrick Downing: a moment of pleasure shared with an elderly couple in the privacy of their own home. This short film proves that pleasure has no age limit.
Commenting on the competition, Xavier Dolan said, “It’s been incredible to work with these three rising film stars and help them bring their captivating interpretations of pleasure and indulgence to the big screen. I hope the competition winners learned as much from me as I did from sponsoring them in this Magnum ‘Be true to your pleasure’ film competition.”
