Having made its first appearance on a soccer pitch in 2010 in South Africa, the Vuitton trunk, specially designed to carry the famous trophy, will be present on July 13, the day of the final, at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Commissioned in 2010 by FIFA, this trophy case, handcrafted in Louis Vuitton’s historic Asnières workshops, has been meticulously crafted to house the illustrious 36 cm, 6.175 kg trophy in 18-carat gold and malachite inlaid in the base. Dressed in the emblematic Monogram canvas, the travel case is fitted with the signature brass corners and lock. The case opens at the front and top so that the trophy can be easily removed when, on the evening of July 13, 2014, it is presented to the captain of the victorious FIFA™ World Cup team.

This special commission from FIFA continues Louis Vuitton’s long tradition of creating elegant and ingenious trunks for transporting its customers’ most precious possessions. In over 150 years, the Asnières workshops have produced an impressive number of bespoke creations, from the folding trunk-bed that accompanied explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza to Africa, to the 1,000-cigar secretary trunk, to the tea set made for the Maharajah of Baroda. Asnières also produced the trophy case housing the world’s oldest sporting trophy, the famous America’s Cup silver ewer, whose history dates back to 1851.

Special orders represent the quintessence of Louis Vuitton’s savoir-faire, combining the imagination of its designers with the talent of its craftsmen. Each special order is a one-off, an original idea that gradually takes shape from detailed sketches to prototypes. Some 450 special orders are made each year, some modest, others more voluminous, but all designed to satisfy a customer’s particular need or make a dream come true. The only condition for any Louis Vuitton special order is that it respects the spirit of travel, being by definition designed to protect and transport a customer’s property – a condition clearly met by the FIFA World Cup Trophy case.
