As part of the 29th International Festival of Fashion and Photography Festival in Hyères, Stage of the Art showcases the avant-garde of contemporary musical creation with the support of Red Bull Studios Paris.
Stage of the Art produces musical events in exceptional art venues, building bridges between different creative fields. For the fourth year running, Stage of the Art is involved in the Festival International de Mode et de Photographie in Hyères as a music producer and programmer.
Following in the footsteps of Auckland, Los Angeles, London and Cape Town, last September saw the opening of the ninth Red Bull Studios in Paris, an exchange platform that welcomes, supports and promotes the local and European independent music scene. So it’s only natural that the studio should welcome artists and collaborate with Stage of the Art on the Festival’s musical program.
For the 2014 edition, the prestigious setting of the Villa Noailles gardens will offer three musical sessions for as many rising stars: CHLÖE HOWL, JAAKKO EINO KALEVI AND C.A.R.
They will have benefited from a creative residency at Red Bull Studios in Paris and London, where each will produce an original track for the occasion!
Promising new artist and pop gem, CHLÖE HOWL, saw her name rise to the top of the charts and her tracks broadcast on the BBC in 2013. As her track “Rumor” created a global buzz on the web, young Chlöe Howl took to the stage at Glastonbury Festival.
At just 19, she has become the phenomenon of the year, with a legitimate claim to the throne of pop-insolence occupied for some years by Lily Allen. The bubbly English singer tells us about youth in all its ambiguity, from adolescent angst to joyful insouciance.
Her voice sublimates her haunting electro-pop melodies and frenzied rhythms. Refreshing and provocative.
In 2012, a trio of Finnish designers won the Festival’s Grand Prix. In 2013, it was Finnish designer Satu Maaranen. This year, Finland invites itself to the music scene. Already a cult figure in Helsinki, JAAKKO EINO KALEVI was the first Scandinavian artist to sign to the Domino label (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The Kills). The multi-instrumentalist plays with electric arpeggios, magnetic bass lines and ethereal vocals. Situated somewhere between the past and the future, Kalevi’s sound resonates above all with the present moment.
His compositional freedom sometimes flirts with light psychedelia, sometimes with synthetic funk. His music exudes a mysterious atmosphere that propels you into an 80s film. A dreamlike Finnish road trip.
“Luminous, poetic and radical”, C.A.R is the solo project of Chloe Raunet. Singer with former London coldwave electronic duo Battant, C.A.R is renowned for her captivating stage presence. Her debut EP seduced the musical sphere, which was quick to offer her remixes (Timothy J Fairplay, Krikor, Discodeine), collaborations (Hermès fashion show, Ivan Smagghe…) and support slots on tours by Cat Power and Gesaffelstein! C.A.R’s music is an incandescent paradox, a moonlit dance between allegories of sensuality and melancholy. The voice fuses with electronic experimentation, omnipresent bass, polar synth and heart-pounding percussion to form bewitching, crystalline melodies. Each track on C.A.R triggers a different imagery, a different mood. His debut album is due in May 2014 (kill the dj).
In addition to these performances, artist PEREZ, a live favorite from our 2013 edition, will present a sound piece conceived as a phantasmagorical retelling of the history of the Villa Noailles.
