Our voice is our identity. We all have the same vocal cords, but our voices are all different. Why? Because physically, the shape of our face means that sound resonates differently for each individual.

Identity, then, as our timbres stand out. But the voice is also about emotion and sharing.

It’s around this sharing that the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, in association with INA (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel) and IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique), has created this exhibition that speaks and tells us more about our voice.

First, you’ll learn about the anatomy of the voice and how it’s put together. Your children can also have fun reconstructing the vocal apparatus with a jigsaw puzzle. You can test your voice on the phonetogram to find out its range and compare yourself to other singers!

Younger listeners will enjoy the IRCAM machines, which allow us to modify our own voice by masculinizing or feminizing it, or by making it sound younger or older. One of the machines, used by the SNCF, is also here! It will make you say what you didn’t say, simply by recording a sample of several sentences, which are then combined to create a completely different one.

Finally, you’ll have the pleasure of discovering “La Voix en Scène”, a twenty-minute documentary produced with INA, which will take you back in time to listen to the most remarkable voices of recent years. Freddie Mercury, Barbara and Asaf Avidan are on the program!
