Hogan, 40 years of a sneaker that invented a new luxury

From the 1986 Traditional to the Hogan Cool Blue special edition, the Italian house retraces four decades of a bet that seemed risky at the time: turning the sneaker into a luxury object.

In 1986, pairing sneaker and luxury was almost a contradiction in terms. Yet that is the bet Hogan made that year by launching the Hogan Traditional — the house’s first luxury sneaker, and one of the first gestures to seriously bring Italian craftsmanship into dialogue with the world of sportswear, until then confined to a register more functional than refined. Forty years later, the house celebrates this anniversary with a special edition of the Hogan Cool.

The story of these four decades reads as a succession of deliberate breaks. Ten years after the Traditional, the Hogan Interactive introduced the “H” that would become the brand’s instantly recognisable visual signature, while anticipating a more relaxed wardrobe that would become the norm in the years that followed. In 2006, the Hogan Olympia combined sporting inspiration with an urban spirit, while collaborations with fashion figures broadened the house’s identity to ready-to-wear and accessories, consolidating the image of a lifestyle house rather than a mere shoemaker.

The last decade, for its part, is written under the banner of a claimed freedom: from Hogan Rebel to the H-Stripes, Hyperlight and Cool lines, the house reinterprets its heritage with a contemporary vision, seeking to win over a new generation without denying its fundamentals. It is precisely this Cool line that Hogan has chosen to mark its 40th anniversary, with a pony-effect leather upper in a deep blue that has become the celebration’s signature colour, set off by the exclusive H86_26 inscription on the sole and repeated identically on the laces, creating a subtle visual continuity between every element of the sneaker.

This choice of the Hogan Cool, rather than an outright reissue of the original Traditional, says something about how the house intends to celebrate its history: not by freezing it in an archive piece, but by bringing it into dialogue with its most recent silhouettes. A way of recalling that the forty years gone by are not a full stop, but a foundation on which to keep building.

This way of celebrating an anniversary with a contemporary piece rather than a simple heritage reissue sets Hogan apart from a number of houses that prefer, on such occasions, to reissue their founding model identically. By choosing the Cool, a silhouette born of the most recent decade of its history, the house asserts that its forty years are told as much through what it has just created as through what it created four decades ago.

The division of this history into four distinct periods — Innovation, Audacity, Courage, Freedom — also says something about how Hogan chooses to tell its own story: not as a succession of collections, but as a trajectory of values, in which each decade answers to a precise watchword rather than a mere aesthetic evolution.

Available in a selection of boutiques and on Hogan.com, this Limited Edition seeks not rupture but continuity: that of a house which, forty years after inventing a genre, continues to tell its story in its own way, one graphic detail at a time, without ever losing sight of the founding gesture of 1986.
