Givenchy takes a closer look at one of the least-discussed design elements in contemporary handbag design: the drawstring closure as the sole means of shaping the bag.
The Voyou Bucket joins the Voyou family—a line conceived around a deconstructed silhouette, without a frame or rigid clasp—through a radical decision regarding its internal architecture. Whereas most contemporary bucket bags address the issue of volume through side gussets or a flat bottom, this one entrusts the entire structure to a single element: a leather drawstring that cinches the opening and, through gradual contraction, shapes the central pocket. The geometry is not predetermined—it is negotiated with each use.
The leather chosen is smooth calfskin with a fine grain and a glossy finish. This choice is no accident: oily or matte leather would absorb the cord’s movements without reflecting them, whereas the polished surface translates them into clean, distinct folds. The flat interior pocket lined with suede—a material whose coefficient of friction keeps objects in place without a closure—complements this concept of gentle containment.
The Issue of the Port
There are three carrying options: a short top handle, an adjustable shoulder strap, and a crossbody strap. This isn’t a compromise for universal comfort—it’s a recognition that the bucket bag, when carried on the shoulder, takes on a different shape than when worn crossbody. The perceived volume changes, as does the way the leather drapes. The drawstring thus becomes a tool for adjusting between the two carrying styles rather than simply a closure.
The color palette is based on a concept of metallic contrast: neutral shades (ivory, pale pink, chocolate, black) are paired with gold hardware, while the only saturated color—cobalt blue—is paired with silver. A classic rule of composition applied to haberdashery.
