CASTELNAU, A RARE CHAMPAGNE IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN

Clearly, Castelnau has chosen the notion of exception. Each year, an atypical cuvée reveals the talent of its cellar master, Elisabeth Sarcelet.

Originally trained as a scientist, she has an eye for precision, in direct connection with the notion of tailor-made wines. Attentive to the terroir, almost to the notion of parcel, she manages to listen to the vine and the precious juice. Attentive to perfecting the expression of this fascinating synthesis of terroir and fruit, she intervenes with delicacy. Vinifying each parcel separately, she intervenes with a rare acuity to blend the 15 juices that make up this cuvée. Olfactory and gustatory notes are her only masters. Among the inputs are the clear wines of the year and prestigious vintages, selected for their rarity and gustatory interest. This Cuvée Hors-Catégorie is therefore unique every year. This year, the prestigious cuvée bears the name of a mythical mountain pass, classified Hors-Catégorie, like an emblem, a challenge. The Hors-Catégorie C.T 2115 refers to the 2115m Col du Tourmalet, climbed in 2011. The correlation becomes obvious with the year 2011, also the year of the cuvée’s print run. Indeed, 3500 bottles of this edition were drawn in June 2011 and disgorged in November 2015.

Aesthetics play an undeniable role here. The pale gold color and fine bubbles catch the eye. On the palate, the surprise is complete. Notes of spice and toast are apparent right from the nose. On the palate, they take on a certain fullness. Accents of brioche, dried fruit, between hazelnut and almond, caracolate with certain citrus fruits. Flavors of apricot kernel and mirabelle plum add opulence to the whole. To be enjoyed with refinement…

A splendid success for Castelnau, infinitely anchored in elegance and subtlety. The tasting moment becomes precious, and this limited edition has real legitimacy.
