Chain reactions at Steffie Christiaens
It was at the Garage Turenne that the young Dutch designer chose to present her women’s collection for summer 2013. The show, which didn’t get off to the best of starts, turned out to be one of the day’s most pleasant surprises.
The end of the world is (supposedly) upon us…or at least that’s what Steffie Christiaens has chosen to explore in her latest collection. If you’re going to die, you might as well do it with class and flair. She puts all her technique to work in the service of her art, because we’re talking about art here.
With color palettes inspired by chemical reactions and the elements at the dawn of the apocalypse in shades of blue, anthracite, pale pink and apricot (the only color to bring a touch of optimism to the collection), the tone is set. The designer uses the image of a “woman on her 31st awaiting her last days on earth”, and this is exactly what emerges from her clothes.
Transparency, details on collars, pleats, high-waisted pants and puffed sleeves, we can easily imagine this woman toasting the end of time in a detached way. Nothing matters anymore, so everything that’s futile becomes primordial. We caught a glimpse of one of the major trends of the moment, the peplum skirt, this time set in an icy universe.
Silk knitwear, pencil skirts and dresses that play on colors to refine the silhouette and emphasize the waistline – this is a collection for grand dames. Special mention for the accessories (notably the chain glasses, in collaboration with designer Bruno Chaussignand), which were simply stunning.
