A Cognac producer is launching a ready-to-drink spritz. The move may seem trivial, but it actually illustrates how a region built on patience is adapting to the culture of the moment.
Ready-to-drink beverages are making inroads into the Cognac market
Domaines Francis Abécassis, a producer that has been based in the Cognac appellation for twenty years, is introducing a creation that stands out in the Charente region: a ready-to-drink spritz sold by the bottle, called ABK6 Orange Spritz. The product is part of a trend known by an acronym that is still relatively unfamiliar to the general public: RTD, short for “ready to drink”—these are pre-mixed cocktails that are served without any preparation.
The ready-to-drink market has expanded significantly and is moving upmarket. It is therefore not at all surprising from a business perspective that a producer from one of France’s most strictly regulated appellations would enter this market. From a cultural perspective, however, this shift warrants closer examination.
A Region’s Patience, A Moment in a Format
Cognac is crafted over the long term: distillation, barrel aging, and patience in the cellars. Everything about the region’s traditions celebrates the art of waiting. The ready-to-drink spritz offers the exact opposite: immediacy, convenience, and the elimination of the preparation step. One bottle makes up to six cocktails, with no special technique or measuring required.
It is this tension that makes the drink so interesting. Presented as “a Charente-style spritz,” it seeks to reconcile two opposing concepts of time: the legacy of a region known for its unhurried pace and the contemporary appetite for instant gratification. The brand does not deny its roots; rather, it adapts them to the pace of a summer aperitif.

A Bet on Diversification
The stakes for a producer in the appellation are high. Embracing ready-to-drink beverages means reaching a younger, more mobile audience—one that is indifferent to the hierarchies of traditional spirits—without sacrificing the credibility that comes with the Charente region’s heritage. The region has already demonstrated—with Pineau and flavored brandies—its ability to expand its repertoire without diluting its reputation.
That leaves the question that every product of this kind raises: Does convenience ultimately overshadow its origin? A spritz is, by definition, a quick drink. Will it leave an impression of its terroir in the memory of those who taste it, or will it be just another seasonal refreshment? Summer will provide the first clues to the answer.
