At the invitation of Benjamin Millepied, James Bort photographed the 18 star dancers of the Opéra National de Paris. For 3 days in July 2015, he offered them to choose the costume of their favorite ballet character (Mathieu Ganio as Romeo, Dorothée Gilbert as Manon, Marie-Agnès Gillot as Eurydice, etc.):
“I wanted to see only the costume on them, without makeup or accessories, without hair. My wish was to make ressen alone, facing his mirror.” James Bort
Sublimated by intense light and blacks, these faces and bodies in motion are shown in a way that is both intimate and spectacular, where power is combined with grace.
James Bort succeeds in capturing movement and stillness to give you a glimpse of these dancers as you’ve never seen them before.
