On May 27, Grant’s organized a special session of its Blendologie workshop for Luxsure. On the program was a plunge into the heart of whisky for readers of the magazine and a few happy few. As the workshop drew to a close, here’s a brief summary.

During this exceptional evening, 7 workshops were on offer:● 5 multi-sensory workshops to introduce visitors to the art of blending. Visitors will discover the essential ingredients and the different stages in the making of a blend whisky (cereals, aromas, flavours, ageing and blending).● 1 masterclass led by an expert blendologist on 3 themes: tasting, blending and ageing. A unique opportunity to recreate a live blend whisky.● 1 tasting workshop to appreciate the different aromatic profiles of GRANT’S family products (Family Reserve, Grant’s 25 years, Sherry Cask…).

This initiation begins with a history of the House of Grant’s. After twenty years spent in a distillery in the Dufftown area of northern Scotland, William Grant built his own distillery in 1887 with the help of his seven sons and two daughters. This was the beginning of a long story that takes us 125 years later, when the company is still owned by the same family.

This is followed by further workshops on the origins of blended, its production and flavours. We learn many things, including what a good blend is. Blended whisky is a careful blend of malt and grain whiskies. It’s the balance struck between the characteristic strength of the former and the elegant sweetness of the latter that makes great whisky. Blendology is, as with wine, the art of blending, mastered by only a few men in the world, with the greatest respect for the know-how and traditions of the whisky houses. Blendology is the art of transforming what is naturally good into something better and more interesting.

After some theory, it was time for practice, with a masterclass on the differences between grain and malt whisky, and the house’s iconic blends, before tasting the various Grant’s cocktails and the famous Grant’s Signature in the corner of the bar.

One of our most entertaining activities was the discovery of the secret room, a real Fort Boyard test, with riddles on the history of Grant’s.

An eveningduringwhich LUXSURE affirmed its philosophy of sharing the art and know-how of one of the most emblematic whisky brands, GRANTS. Understand the differences between malt and grain whisky, the importanceofageing.. . and the opportunity, for one evening, to become an apprentice blendologist.
