Comics Selection
Today, superheroes are everywhere, thanks in no small part to their cinematic adaptations.
Currently, it’s the release of “Iron Man 3” (Marvel) on DVD and Blu-Ray that is logically attracting attention. Directed this time by Shane Black, the film is a great success for one simple reason: there’s never a dull moment! And yet, the script co-written by the director is bound to surprise comic book fans. Firstly, because the Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) is nowhere near as powerful as he is in the comics. Secondly, because there are fewer action scenes than in previous films. And finally, despite his psychological problems, Tony Stark doesn’t really take himself too seriously throughout the film.
In short, this 3rd installment in the adventures of Iron Man is out of the ordinary, but works rather well. Worth seeing again and again.
Meanwhile, don’t miss “Star Trek: Into Darkness” (Paramount) next October, again directed by J.J. Abrams. This time, Kirk and his crew will face Kahn, an enemy who already starred in a 1982 film in the saga. An exciting new adventure, thanks to a cast as perfect as ever and superb action scenes. What’s more, the script, which resembles that of “Demolition Man”, will really keep you on the edge of your seat. We’re already waiting for the sequel…
Also worth noting is the release of Wong Kar Wai’s superb film “The Grandmaster” on DVD and Blu-Ray (Wild Side), if, like many Americans, you love martial arts and legendary fights.
Delcourt has also come up with the excellent idea of publishing “2 Guns”, the comic-book that inspired the film of the same name, out this month. A cops-and-robbers story, a true crime thriller for adults, by Steven Grant and Mateus Santolonco, with many surprises in store for readers.
And while we await the cinema release of “Ender”, Panini brings you the comic book adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s cult novel. This futuristic tale follows the destiny of a child, manipulated from an early age to serve his country, the army and save the planet from particularly fearsome aliens. The Yost-Ferry duo’s ambitious science-fiction tale offers an interesting reflection on our society, the notion of sacrifice and moral conflicts within a family.
Finally, volume 3 of the complete “Prince Valiant” collection will delight fans of Hal Foster, at the height of his powers in the early ’40s (Soleil l’Age d’Or). Bonus features include an astonishing portfolio of censorship cases.
