On Wednesday May 11, 2011, the 64th Cannes Film Festival opened with its traditional red carpet. For almost a week and a half, film buffs and fashionistas from all over the world will be thrilled by every step up the steps, as a host of stars, each more sophisticated than the last, compete in elegance before the flashbulbs of the photographers.
This year, despite the “color block” trend of the season, a wave of white seems to have swept over the Croisette to our delight, offering us a veritable festival of glamour and paying tribute to the model of sophistication and timeless grace proposed by the Festival poster.
The tone was set by the dazzling Uma Thurman, who donned an immaculate feather-trimmed strapless gown by Versace from the Autumn Winter 2011-2012 collection for the opening ceremony. An elegant pair of Jimmy Choo Miles sandals in nude tones rounded off a glamorous, streamlined silhouette. The only touch of color conceded by the star was provided by a pair of emerald earrings and matching bracelet, all from Chopard. The actress, a member of the jury, began the day in a white Dolce & Gabbana gown.

Cannes Midnight In Paris Party Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard and Rachel McAdams
Rachel MacAdams donned a sculptural white draped gown for the evening organized by Maison Chopard in honor of Midnight in Paris, the Woody Allen film in which she stars. After stunning us on the way up the steps in her Marchesa trompe-l’oeil red silk organza gown with long flesh-colored tulle train, and waking us up this morning in a slim-fitting white Maxime Simoens gown, Rachel MacAdams was the perfect choice. The actress was back in sober style for this unforgettable evening.
Faye Dunaway, the face of the Festival since her face appears on the Festival poster, was of course in attendance, and in turn succumbed to the white wave in her delicate Dior silk long gown and matching evening clutch. She was accompanied by director Jerry Schatzberg, who directed her in Portrait of a Fallen Child in 1969, in which the actress played a model on the verge of depression. This film, which was almost selected for competition at Cannes at the time, has been chosen to open the Cannes Classics section (the Croisette’s ciné-club), in its restored version.
For At the premiere of Julia Leight‘s Sleeping Beauty, L’Oréal muse Jane Fonda looked sublime in a slightly pink Emilio Pucci maxi dress, accessorized with a pair of earrings and a diamond ring from Chopard.
Alexa Chung chose to sublimate her Balenciaga gown with a diamond and platinum Chopard necklace adorned with a yellow diamond in keeping with her preppy look. Her very sixties silhouette brought a breath of fresh air to the red carpet.
L’Oréal muse Cheryl Cole caused quite a stir in her vertiginously low-cut Stéphane Rolland gown for the premiere of Nanni Moretti’s Habemus Papam. Unlike her fellow models, she opted for a femme fatale look, with heavy make-up.
Sarah Jessica Parker chose a long white Dolce & Gabbana gown for the Montblanc evening. True to her Carrie Bradshaw persona, she chose an unexpected floral Elie Saab gown to walk up the Palace steps for the film Wu Xia.
Clémence Poésy looked absolutely fabulous at the all-natural Calvin Klein evening in a white and gray Calvin Klein dress from the fall-winter 2011-2012 collection. Sober and chic with a deliciously retro allure, she paired her outfit with the house’s delicately strappy sandals.
Astrid Berges-Frisbey chose a little white Chanel Haute-Couture dress for the photocall of the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Fountain of Youth, which she woke up in red pumps. For the walk up the steps, the young actress put her trust in Chanel once again, choosing a gray lace gown embroidered with silver stones, which she embellished with a white gold and diamond Chopard bracelet. Penelope Cruz also cut a perfect figure in a Stella McCartney blue velvet tube dress from the Autumn Winter 2011-2012 collection, which she paired with Casadei satin pumps in the same tones.
As for Johnny Depp, he too showed his predilection for white as he walked up the steps in a white jacket and shirt for the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean. Penelope Cruz was breathtaking in her gray Marchesa chiffon gown, set off by Chopard diamond and rubellite earrings and the famous Power Swarovski clutch.
The sexiest member of the jury, Jude Law, interpreted this white wave in his own way, wearing a white cotton piqué bow tie to great effect over his black tuxedo with fine powder grain lapels and black Dior satin, matched with his L.U.C XPS Chopard watch.
Let’s bet that this Cannes Festival will be of the best vintage !!!
