Altuzarra Spring | Summer 2019 Collection

“I wanted to capture the feeling of being in love during the summer- of happiness and elation, but also of vulnerability and fragility, and the inherent tension and thrill that comes with first love. I was inspired by movies that explored young love, from Cinema Paradiso to Stealing Beauty and Call Me By Your Name, and memories of my own summers in Italy as a teenager. I wanted the collection to evoke a garden of sensual delight, lush and dazzling, drenched in sunlight and echoing with the sound of waves. I started with a strict silhouette, and slowly started breaking it down, making it feel more and more undone.” – J.A.

The trio of opening looks sets the tone for a collection imbued with the spirit of summer. Boxy jackets are twisted and distorted by drawstrings, and worn off-the-shoulder as if mid-shrug; shirts are cut to appear warped and shrunken as if nonchalantly left on the sand on a hot July day; dresses and jackets are sliced open at the solar plexus, peeling away layers of fabric, exposing one’s vulnerabilities; suede and leather patches are roughly pieced together, seams laid bare; silk dresses are cut raw, edges frayed, linings left undone; shells are knotted on macramé net bag and shoes, mimicking a fisherman’s net pulled from the sea.
