More than twenty years after his death, Gainsbourg is still the talk of the town, and not just in France. He has become a cult singer. Many international artists have already paid tribute to him. The bibliography on the artist is extensive. Journalist Arnaud Viviant adds his contribution to the edifice with a chiselled little primer entitled “Gainsbourg ou l’art sans art” (“Gainsbourg or art without art”).
Here’s a very personal biography of Serge Gainsbourg: Arnaud Viviant dedicates to him a beautiful text, bursting like an alphabet book, intuitive and poetic, a sparkling pileup of little theories on the major singer of minor art. The author dedicates this book to Gilles Verlant, the greatest Gainsbourg specialist, who recently passed away.
” I wanted to make an analysis of his work. With Gainsbourg, you don’t get the feeling you’re dealing with someone old, or dead for that matter. It’s “Gainsbarre” who’s dead, but Gainsbourg’s dandyism isn’t over. He’s evolving, he’s getting into the swing of things, and he’s still provoking just as many requests for adaptation around the world. He’s a global figure of provocation and, in these times, that’s good, isn’t it? He’s a fascinating figure in pop culture, because he’s lived through the times in which he found himself. . ”
There are many entries, such as cigarettes, Ferré, homosexuality, Melody Nelson… It’s a very personal dictionary that can be read in small chunks. It’s well-written and fine. A fine idea.
