MARSEILLE M LA MODE

From July 2 to August 19 – Galeries Lafayette St Ferréol 5th floor gallery – Open: Tuesday to Friday, 2pm to 6pm – Saturday, 11am to 7pm. Free admission.
Conceived by the Maison Méditerranéenne des Métiers de la Mode (MMMM), the “Marseille M la Mode” exhibition aims to introduce the public to the wealth of Mediterranean creativity, and to remind us that Marseille is a city and a metropolis of fashion! Co-produced with Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture, “Marseille M la Mode” is a unique contemporary exhibition combining photography, water installation, video and Mediterranean fashion.
Catherine Örmen, exhibition curator and fashion historian, presents the creative worlds of the 14 Euro-Mediterranean prizewinners from 2010/2011 and the 7 young fashion entrepreneurs from Marseille invited by the MMMM in 2012. Scenographer Mark Blezinger subtly blends 3 elements: an animated veil, the Mediterranean and video monitors leading the visitor, in a lively and individualized way, to these 21 personalities, be they jewelry, textile or clothing designers. Armand Amar composed the original music for this exhibition, featuring soprano Sandrine Piau.
Psychoanalyst Pascale Navarri sheds light on the DNA of Mediterranean fashion designers, their family stories and their filiations.
Fashion journalist Isabelle Lefort sheds light on the ties that bind fashion personalities in the Mediterranean through the 80 interviews she conducted (Marseille-based brands, manufacturers, MMMM Euro-Mediterranean prizewinners, luxury and fashion experts).
The exhibition is accompanied by a lifestyle photo essay by Ferrante Ferranti, reflecting the freedom and boldness of Marseille’s stylistic expressions. And a Mook (a 304-page bilingual book produced by a collective of multidisciplinary authors) with a preface by novelist Maylis de Kerangal, Prix Médicis 2010.
The exhibition
Marseille M la Mode is the only exhibition scheduled during the cultural capital of the year. It offers several themes around 21 winners/young fashion entrepreneurs:
– fashion historian Catherine Örmen’s decoding of their creative worlds and sensibilities
– an analysis of the mythical South by psychoanalyst Pascale Navarri
– a look at Marseille by novelist and 2010 Prix Médicis winner Maylis de Kerangal -> extract on request
– a lifestyle by photographer Ferrante Ferranti on the freedom and boldness of Marseille’s stylistic expressions -> photos available on request
– a study on the family sagas of regional brands by journalist Isabelle Lefort
Creation in the Mediterranean
The MMMM’s legitimacy can be explained both geographically and by the economic weight of a multitude of companies of Mediterranean origin that have been based in Marseille for decades. This dynamic has led MMMM to move into a new 1,000 m2 space in spring 2013, at the heart of the Euroméditerranée economic and cultural district in Marseille.
