THE WORLD’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS 2013. APRIL 29, LONDON

After celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012, the 2013 edition of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, will return to London’s famous Guildhall this Monday April 29 for a prestigious ceremony.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants event is organized by Restaurant magazine and attended by the world’s most influential restaurateurs, top chefs and international media. Last year, over two million people from 222 countries visited www.theworlds50best.com. These figures testify to the undeniable interest this ranking arouses among food lovers the world over.
The rewards
The highlight of the ceremony, at which the world’s 50 best restaurants are honored, is the presentation of the coveted World’s Best Restaurant award, presented by S.Pellegrino. Other categories include the World’s Best Female Chef award from Veuve Clicquot, the Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by Diners Club International and the Chef’s Choice award supported by Silestone.
In 2013, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony will be awarding a new individual category: Sustainable Restaurant, sponsored by Zacapa. This award will go to the most socially and environmentally responsible restaurant among the 50 winners.
Drawing up the list
The list is compiled from votes cast by the Academy of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by Diners Club International, an influential group of over 900 restaurant leaders. The Academy is made up of 26 distinct regions around the world. Each region has 36 members, including a president, and each member can represent seven votes. At least three of these seven votes must reward a restaurant from a region other than their own.
Highly respected food critics, chefs, restaurateurs and “gastronomes” form the committee for each region. The members draw up their list in order of preference, based on the 18 best restaurants they have tested over the past 18 months. There is no pre-established list of criteria.
Results
The results will be published online at www.theworlds50best.com as soon as they have been revealed to chefs and Academy members at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony in London on April 29.
The results will also appear in the May issue of Restaurant magazine and in an independently published guide to the world’s 50 best restaurants, available from May 1. Last year, the site’s page offering a detailed guide to all the restaurants featured in the current and previous lists received over 391,960 individual visits on the night of the ceremony.
William Drew, publisher of Restaurant magazine, said, “Every year we look forward to announcing the date of the awards ceremony, as it marks the start of the 2013 season of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.”
“We aim for our results to be a true mirror of today’s culinary scene, for our criteria to allow members to vote for establishments from all over the world, from small restaurants in remote areas to the world’s most famous restaurants.
We are proud of the integrity of our Academy and are confident that the 2013 list will be more fascinating and inspiring than ever.”
For the third year running, the ceremony will be broadcast live on www.finedininglovers.com, an international community for food enthusiasts. In 2012, over 20,000 Internet users followed the live broadcast of the ceremony.
