“L’échelle des sens”, Franck Ruzé’s new novel

Among the literary releases in January, one of our favorites is Franck Ruzé’s novel. Set against a very contemporary backdrop, the novel deals with prostitution among female students.

The pitch: Tennessee is a psychology student. She works as a clandestine prostitute in a luxury agency. She doesn’t believe in love or feelings, only in the price they fetch in a society where everything is for sale. It’s her observation, her analysis and her weapon to protect herself from the violence of the world and the fear of getting hurt.

Right from the start of the book, the reader is plunged into the middle of Tennessee’s conversation with a client who is about to deflower her. No observation rounds! The rest of the novel unfolds in short, fast-paced scenes.

We follow the disillusioned journey of a young girl who sells her charms with a special touch…. She sells her virginity, which she then surgically restores. For her, “virginity is just a little piece of meat that breaks off, that’s all”.

It’s all very chilling at times. This young girl is at the heart of a whirlwind of violence. This violence is that of liberal society, with its law of supply and demand.

Tennessee also opens up to a psychoanalyst, revealing her flaws without much conviction. The relationship she begins with Xavier, a student, seems complicated. The story of a young girl in search of meaning.

In short, a novel that can be read in one sitting. The story of our time.
