Comics Selection

Today, superheroes are everywhere, thanks in no small part to film adaptations.

But comics aren’t limited to Marvel and DC.
“Prince Valiant” is the perfect example. Editions Soleil is offering to (re)discover this mythical comic strip by Hal Foster in the superb “L’Age d’Or” collection. For almost 35 years, this medieval epic was published in the Sunday pages of American newspapers. Even today, it’s considered one of the founding works of world comics.

And don’t miss “Pim Pam Poum”, celebrating its 115th anniversary (published by Michel Lafon). The brainchild of Rudolph Dirks, this comic strip was first published in the NY Journal. Its heroes are two rascals and their aunt, the Captain and the Astronomer. To this day, the comic strip’s illustrations demonstrate the genius of its creator, and are as funny as ever. Has “Pim Pam Poum” influenced other comic book creators? The question deserves to be asked…

What’s more, the only screenplay created by Jim Henson (creator of “The Muppet Show”) has been brought to life by Ramon K. Pérez. Pérez and is available in comic book form. “Tale of Sand” is sure to amaze (Paquet).

And don’t miss the 2nd volume of “Rising Stars” (Delcourt), written by Joseph Michael Straczynski, to find out even more about the fate of these 113 children. We’re already looking forward to the 3rd and final act, unreleased in France!
Finally, those nostalgic for the Ninja Turtles will appreciate volume 3 of their adventures, “Les ombres du Passé” (Soleil US Comics), with the co-creator of these famous characters at the helm.

On the DVD side, “The Dark Knight Rises” is the event of the moment. It’s a masterly film, thanks to exceptional direction and casting. However, this time the script is too predictable and, above all, Batman doesn’t appear much! The Warner film is available exclusively as a collector’s edition, or for rental, notably from Vidéo Futur.

On the cinema front, 3 films are unmissable at the start of the year. “Django”, the new Tarantino, of course, but also “0 Dark 30” (January 23), which retraces the hunt for Bin Laden, not forgetting Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40” (February 6)! For Parisians, the Wepler has a particularly luxurious new auditorium.

On the music front, Ne-Yo’s new album “Red” is a must for R’n’B fans. A fan of comic books (the booklet of his previous LP was designed like a superhero comic book), this time he offers 13 effective tracks, dance, unstoppable slows and guest stars Wiz Khalifa and Tim MacGraw (“Motown”). Ideal for warming up the winter…

Finally, fans of the United States will appreciate “American Dream” by Guillemette Faure (Don Quichotte). A truly original rock, historical and political dictionary of America.
