The Plaza Athénée Hotel and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées celebrate 100 years of shared history on Avenue Montaigne, with
six “sacred” dates
1913-2013: 100 years of shared, unusual history…

One is known as one of the most mythical hotels in Paris, with its Haussmann-style façade adorned with red geraniums, its marquees and its elegant valets… The other is recognized as one of Paris’s finest live entertainment venues, with its unique 1900-seat auditorium, its historic significance and its eclectic program. Both have been the very soul of Avenue Montaigne for a century now…

Indeed, in 1913, the Plaza Athénée was inaugurated a stone’s throw from the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, at No. 25 avenue Montaigne. The Galerie des Gobelins, the “Le Relais Plaza” restaurant, the lounges and apartments welcomed the great and the good, from Josephine Baker to Rudolph Valentino and Maurice Chevalier…

6 unique evenings for the anniversaries of two equally unique Houses.

Today, the two houses are getting together to celebrate their centenary in the most beautiful way possible: together, around an exceptional 6-date festive program, starting on May 30, 2013, almost 100 years to the day after the launch of Nijinsky’s Rite of Spring, which saw the first hours of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

What’s on the program for these exceptional evenings?
After arriving at your hotel, you’ll be escorted by a bellman to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées: comfortably seated in a box, you’ll be one of the privileged few to attend one of the performances of The Rite of Spring to celebrate the theater’s centenary.
At intermission, you are invited to refresh yourself with a glass of champagne in a private lounge.
At the end of one of the world’s most unique performances – for which all seats have been reserved for several months! -You’ll then head to the Relais Plaza for a refined “supper”, in the spirit of those served at the time.

The Rite of Spring in different choreographic versions

No less than four choreographic versions of The Rite of Spring will take place at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées before the summer, and the Plaza Athénée hotel offers you the chance to book all four.

May 30 and 31:
The premiere of The Rite of Spring on May 29, 1913 marked modern history and created the founding event that is still – a century later – the artistic vocation of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Performances on May 30 and 31 will feature the same evening as Nijinsky’s original 1913 version, remounted in 1987 by historians Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer, and a new creation by Berlin choreographer Sasha Waltz with the forces of the Orchestra and Ballet of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Stravinsky’s musical birthplace, led by its charismatic director Valery Gergiev.

After Vaslav Fomitch Nijinsky’s original work and that of Sasha Waltz, two creations inspired by the legend and music of the original work will take place:

– Quelques jours plus tard, on June 6 and 7, Pina Bausch’s choreography performed by the dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal.

– Finally, on June 25 and 26, choreographer and performer Akram Khan creates his own vision of The Rite, inspired by the spirit of Stravinsky.

About The Rite of Spring…
The inauguration of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées was made famous by the premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a ballet performed by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes troupe. After 100 years of existence, the desire for excellence that guided the first season, marked by the scandal of Le Sacre du Printemps from the very first days, has been perpetuated and remains as present as ever. The Rite of Spring remains the most indissociable work in this hall dedicated to artistic imagination and musical and choreographic creation.
The Centenary celebration could not have been imagined without The Rite of Spring coming to life once again on the stage of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
