LES AMOURS DE LA REINE DE LA CHANSON ET DU ROI DE LA BOXE
Tuesday, November 20, 2012
SVV Eve is organizing a sale dedicated to Edith Piaf and Marcel Cerdan at the Hôtel des ventes Drouot on November 20.
This sale will be an opportunity to revive the myth of a passion shattered in mid-air, that of the couple formed by Edith Piaf and Marcel Cerdan.
Admirers and those nostalgic for the era will be able to purchase three garments, intimate and moving mementos of these two iconic figures.
Edith Piaf (1915-1963) first met Marcel Cerdan in 1946, but it wasn’t until 1948 that they declared their love for each other in New York, where their respective careers had taken them.
The singer signed up for a series of recitals at several venues in the American capital. The “Moroccan bomber” came here to win the middleweight title of world champion, beating Tony Zale on September 21, 1948.
The romance between the two stars continued after their return to France, inspiring Edith Piaf with creative flourishes such as L’hymne à l’amour.
Though brief and tragically interrupted – Marcel Cerdan died in a plane crash in October 1949 – their relationship was nonetheless intense and highly publicized.
This affair had a profound effect on the singer, and is one of the major keys to her work.
The reunion of three previously unseen pieces presented at Drouot evokes this vibrant New York episode through :

– a beige and cream striped evening gown by Jean FARELL, 37 avenue Georges V, Paris, and its black underskirt, worn by Edith Piaf, who came to cheer on her champion, during the 1948 final (€2,000 / €3,000).
– a boxer-short worn by Marcel Cerdan between 1945 and 1948, and possibly during this historic event. This piece is estimated at €500 / €600;
– a blue and red bathrobe with belt. Accompanying the shorts and worn during the same period, this bathrobe is expected to fetch bids of between €1,000 and €1,200. Both garments are signed “BENLEE Sporting Goods, MFG . CO. N.Y.C.”.
