Little Fernand, the hearty hot dog

If you’re a Parisian, you won’t have missed the phenomenon of Big Fernand and his famous hamburgers in his “atelier” in the 9th arrondissement.

Recently, his “little brother”, Little Fernand by name, opened its doors a few numbers away and offers hot dog specialties.

The Fernands, big and small

Well, you might ask: what’s so special about a hot dog? Well, at Little Fernand, there are a number of things that add to the pleasure of eating one.
The first thing to note is the super-friendly welcome from the team, who explain how the hot dogs are prepared, and where the products come from. Homemade bread, homemade sausages, including the poultry-calf recipe developed for Little Fernand, ideal for those who eat without pork. French cheeses and mustards, as well as vegetables, will be a delight for “Made in France” fans!
So, inevitably, tasting a hot dog can only be a pleasure. The fresh bun is crisp, the sausage is moist and crunchy, and the side dishes bring out the flavor perfectly. And to make matters worse, the presentation is impeccable: your hot dog is kept in a cardboard box in the restaurant’s colors to preserve the heat.

The restaurant may be small, but it’s first and foremost a “good fast-fooding” place; you’ll stay for no more than 30 minutes and sit at high wooden tables, where your neighbor can tell you about the recipe he’s tried.

Because beyond the traditional hot dog (bun, sausage from a choice of 3 types, and accompanied by one of 4 mustards or ketchup with balsamic vinegar) Little Fernand offers surprising, well-thought-out recipes.

There are 5 of them, so you can match your rather classic hot dog with cheeses like Vache Kiri, but more like Fourme d’Ambert. This is the one I tested: it’s called the “Bzzzz!” and it was a delight. It combines the saltiness of a hot dog with the sweetness of the cheese and the candied onions.

Little Fernand’s full menu: something for everyone!

Little Fernand offers several formulas, including organic drinks (the famous ” Bionade “, fruit lemonades that are just too sweet), accompaniments of homemade potato chips or the dreaded Coleslaw, for that US touch. There are also desserts, but I didn’t fancy the brownie, and that’s clearly not why we go there.

In short, it’s good, original, fresh, friendly, central and decent; with the “entry-level” hot dog at €7, which is rather generous, it’s worth the detour.

Drop in for lunch or dinner, Monday to Saturday, and follow their news on their Fan page: https: //www.facebook.com/LittleFernand

I promise Little Fernand, like his elder brother before him, a bright culinary future. See you soon at 45 rue du Faubourg Poissonnière!
