A veritable phenomenon in Italy, Giovanni Allevi is a pianist out of all categories, a mad scientist of the piano.
Hundreds of thousands of young people love his music, film his concerts, confide in him on the Net, and get in touch with him directly. He always tries to answer them personally, and is moved by their response.
“Their affection is a mystery.
Giovanni Allevi is one of the most singular independent pianist-composers on the scene today. His musical language, cultivated and emotional, outlines a different kind of contemporary classical music, based on a new melodic and rhythmic intensity. His musical heroes include Bach, Chopin and Rachmaninov, as well as Gershwin, Corea, Nyman and Glass… He does not deny the classical form, but wishes to nourish it with more contemporary musical material. His melodies are compelling and evocative. His rhythmic foundations know how to borrow skilfully from jazz and more contemporary music.
In each piece, he invents a veritable little personal and stylized universe.
After a very long career in classical music, this doctorate in philosophy decided to fly solo with a magnificent album: Secret Love.
With over 700,000 albums sold in Italy since 2005, Allevi is both a mystery and a phenomenon. His popularity would already be incredible for a singer, but for an instrumentalist, it’s almost unheard of! And since nothing in his nature predisposes this music to appeal only to Italians, Allevi is now opening up to other countries. After his triumphs on stage in Italy, where sometimes the gigantism of the venues contrasts with the musical intimacy shared with a rather young audience, we see him in Germany, Japan, the United States (a prestigious concert at the Blue Note); In November 2011, he gives a sold-out concert at the Alhambra in Paris.
Allevi arrives in France in a favorable context: an undiminished popular appetite for the singular, mysterious and emotional piano, which has its roots in Erik Satie, has often been relayed and supported by film music, and is even encouraging many young people to take up learning the instrument.
We had the opportunity to meet him during a private concert at the Carmen.
A moment of ultimate musicality, a pure and rare moment.
