A very special tasting evening was held in Paris on Saturday, January 15, 2011.
The small German wine-growing region of “Franconia” (Franken) in northern Bavaria presented its finest wines and artisan specialities to international guests.
Franconian wines are bottled in the famous “Bocksbeutel” (= goat’s pouch), a pot-bellied bottle shaped rather like those used for Armagnac and reserved exclusively for Franconian wines. They are known as some of Germany’s finest and most precious wines. Very rare, they are hardly ever sold outside their region of origin. Even in Germany, they are rarely found outside Bavaria. We looked for it in Paris and couldn’t find a single bottle! Tasteful, fruity-elegant and full of character, white wines from Franconia in particular are sought after by the world’s most refined connoisseurs.
The company “Der Bocksbeutel in den Colonnaden”, Hamburg/Germany, specializes exclusively in wines from this region and presented – at the invitation of Parisian friends – the 2009 vintages. In addition, they offered pâtés, terrines and game sausages from the Bavarian forests, as well as large country breads produced by small “Slowfood” artisans.
It was a real surprise, even for Parisian vinophiles and gourmets who are generally more spoiled than elsewhere.
