Canon announces the launch of a new model in its renowned EOS DSLR range: the EOS 60D. Successor to the EOS 50D, the EOS 60D has been designed for photographers who want to take their skills to the next level. It offers high performance, a wide range of creative functions, an adjustable LCD screen and optimized ergonomics. These are just some of the innovations that will enable photography enthusiasts to record not only photos, but also spectacular Full HD videos.

High speed, high resolution
Featuring an 18-megapixel APS-C sensor, the EOS 60D produces a wealth of detail and 1.6x the focal length of the attached lens to record printable poster-size images in a multitude of aspect ratios. Canon’s powerful DIGIC 4 processor technology rapidly processes the image information recorded by the 4-channel CMOS sensor, ensuring superb color reproduction and enabling high-speed continuous shooting at up to 5.3 fps on a maximum burst of 58 full-resolution JPEG images.
The standard sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400 can be extended to ISO 12,800, a level at which the EOS 60D produces uniform images with minimal noise in low-light conditions. The autofocus system with 9 cross-type collimators guarantees fast, precise focusing. The central collimator provides additional sensitivity for lenses with apertures greater than f/2.8, appreciated by photographers in particular for obtaining shallow depth-of-field in portraiture or special atmospheric effects in the distribution of blur.
The EOS 60D is equipped with Canon’s iFCL metering system, first introduced with the EOS 7D and immediately acclaimed for its performance, consisting of a dual-layer sensor that provides 63-zone metering. Information on the distance to the subject in focus is collected by the autofocus system and combined with color and luminance readings to guarantee precise exposure, whatever the situation. As for flash exposure, the Speedlite transmitter integrated into the Eos 60D enables multiple Speedlite EX flash units to be controlled from the body, for creative lighting.
Recording from all angles
The new 7.7 cm (3″) swivel LCD screen features a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1,040,000 dots, enhancing its flexibility of use and offering photographers the possibility of viewing their images with incredible richness of detail. The steerable screen makes framing easier from difficult vantage points, and when it’s not possible to frame effectively from the viewfinder, it can be tilted during screen viewing to ensure effective composition. Taking wildlife portraits, framing while holding the camera above eye level or at ground level is easy. The screen’s protective glass features an anti-reflective and water-repellent treatment (which prevents water droplets from adhering) that also improves visibility in bright sunlight and from different angles.
Maximum creativity
The new Basic + technology lets photographers add their own personal creative touch to photos without having to worry about applying different settings. This means you can add a particular mood to a scene, depending on the lighting and the type of scene, while remaining in one of the result modes: portrait, landscape, close-up, sports, night snapshot or creative. Various dominant rendering effects can be added by automatically applying Basic + corrections such as daylight, cloudy or sunset, or Picture Style presets including saturated, softener, warm tone or black and white.
Aimed at all those who wish to develop their creative vision, the EOS 60D offers a whole range of new functions to help record better photos. Effects that add an extra dimension to images can also be applied directly from the camera. The powerful DIGIC 4 processor also enables RAW images to be processed directly in the camera. As a result, the photographer can modify parameters such as brightness, contrast and white balance, or correct distortion or chromatic aberration, immediately after shooting. The optimized image can then be saved as a JPEG file ready for printing or transfer to a computer or the web.
For photographers who want to add the usual post-production effects to their images without using expensive software, the EOS 60D incorporates a whole range of creative filter effects that can be applied directly from the camera. These filters, which include grainy black & white, softener, toy camera and miniature effects, give images a different look and enable photographers to work according to particular themes: for example, the grainy black & white effect gives images a reportage style, while the softener effect makes it easy to smooth out flesh tones in portraiture.
EOS videos: Full HD video with complete control
To give photographers the freedom to go beyond stills, the EOS 60D is also capable of recording 1920 x 1080p HD video at a multitude of frame rates, including 30, 25 and 24 fps, or 60 and 50 fps at 720p resolution. Video cropping mode is also available, recording on a 640 x 480 pixel area in the center of the sensor to create a magnification effect corresponding to around seven times the focal length of the lens.
Full manual control in video lets photographers choose their focus and exposure settings, and take full advantage of the specific rendering of the various lenses in Canon’s extensive EF range. The external microphone socket and the ability to adjust the sound volume during recording guarantee a soundtrack of a quality to match that of the images, for a broadcast-quality audio result.
For all those who wish to share images with family and friends, the integrated HDMI port compatible with Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI-CEC) enables video and still images to be viewed on any HD-ready TV and playback to be controlled via the TV remote control.
Designed for flexibility
The EOS 60D’s body has been completely redesigned. It combines ergonomic lines with a new key layout for quick and easy settings. Frequently-used controls have been grouped together for easy access, while the rear control dial, multi-controller and SET button have been combined into a single multi-control dial, making it easy to display menus and validate settings with a simple gesture of the thumb. The mode selector now features a lock button to prevent unintentional setting changes during transport.
A quick control access button provides instant access to the most frequently used shooting settings and playback commands. The functions of a multitude of buttons can also be customized, allowing users to configure the camera to their own preferences. To ensure perfect horizon alignment in landscape photography, an electronic level can be displayed in the viewfinder or on-screen to simplify composition and limit the corrections required in post-production.
The EOS 60D is one of Canon’s new models compatible with high-capacity SDXC memory cards, offering up to 2TB of space and enabling photographers to continue recording HD video and high-resolution RAW and JPEG photos without having to change cards. For better management of the camera’s large image libraries, EOS 60D users can assign their favorite images a rating of between 1 and 5 stars. This makes them easy to view and locate on screen. Once transferred from the body to a computer, the tags corresponding to this rating can also be viewed in various image editing and management software programs, including Canon DPP of course.
Share the moment
For photographers who wish to transfer content wirelessly, the EOS 60D integrates Eye-Fi functions. The user interface incorporates an Eye-Fi section that allows the Wi-Fi function to be deactivated when not in use, to extend battery life.
