100 years of the Hollywood sign: the best outdoor activities and experiences

Los Angeles celebrates the centenary of the famous Hollywood sign, the city’s iconic symbol for a century. To mark the occasion, Los Angeles is offering a host of outdoor activities and experiences that allow visitors to admire the sign from panoramic vantage points. According to a recent survey conducted by Los Angeles Tourism, nearly 80% of respondents consider the Hollywood sign to be the city’s most iconic monument.

With summer just around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sun, fresh air and views of the Hollywood Sign. Perched on the hills overlooking Los Angeles, the sign is visible from hiking trails, cultural attractions, local parks and other venues throughout the city. Adam Burke, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, points out that this offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the warm weather while having a front-row seat to Los Angeles’ most recognizable landmark.

There are many activities to enjoy the spectacular views from the Hollywood Sign. For hiking enthusiasts, Griffith Park offers several hiking trails on Mount Hollywood, including the Cahuenga Peak Trail, which offers a unique view of downtown Los Angeles from behind the sign. Bronson Canyon also offers hiking options and various vantage points from which to admire the sign. For those who prefer walks or picnics to hikes, Lake Hollywood Park Reservoir offers a direct view of the sign and is accessible by car and on foot. Finally, Runyon Canyon, one of the city’s most popular places to see and be seen, offers spectacular distant views of the sign, especially from the top of the park.

For those who prefer guided activities, Bikes and Hikes offers two different tours to the Hollywood Sign that explain the area’s unique history. Guided horseback tours to Sunset Ranch Hollywood also offer spectacular views of the sign, day and night. Starline tours’ one-hour Hollywood sign tours also shuttle through the back roads of the Hollywood Hills, with views of Lake Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles and the glamour of Hollywood Boulevard.

Finally, there are several options for discovering the Hollywood Sign from the air, such as Group 3 Aviation’s 35-minute Hooray for Hollywood Tour, which takes you over the sign and the Hollywood Hills. Orbic Air offers a ten-minute tour that includes bird’s-eye views of Universal Studios Hollywood and the Griffith Observatory. From Long Beach’s Queen Mary Heliport, IEX Helicopters also takes passengers up close for an incredible view of the Hollywood sign, flying over coastal landmarks to the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles. The one-hour Star Helicopters VIP tour takes off from Hawthorne Municipal Airport and the one-hour Star Helicopters VIP tour takes off from Hawthorne Municipal Airport and includes a flyover of the Hollywood sign as well as panoramic views from the South Bay to the Valley.
