On the Indonesian island of Sumba, a new jewel has just come into being: the Hotel Cap Karoso. An authentic, eco-friendly retreat built on the beach of Karoso, in the southwest of Sumba, that pearl of Indonesia still untouched by mass tourism. The hotel’s French owners, Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara, wanted to create a resort in line with the values of sustainability, authenticity and community, in close collaboration with local communities.
Sumba, a wild and unspoilt island
Sumba is a discreet island located an hour’s flight east of Bali, well known to surfers, but sheltered from mass tourism. The island has preserved its culture and way of life, as well as its animist beliefs. Today, it is considered one of the world’s last megalithic cultures. Nature is also incredibly well preserved, with deserted beaches, lagoons, savannah and wooded valleys inhabited by endemic species. Sumba is a true natural gem, combining all the attractions of a pristine paradise.
Architecture combining authenticity and modernity
For this 47-room hotel and 20-villa project, the owners called on British architect Gary Fell and his firm GFAB Architects. The aim was to design a project in communion with its environment, in a permanent indoor/outdoor spirit. The interiors were designed by Jakarta-based Bitte Design Studio. The French art of living was infused by Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara, who added a touch of chic to these serene spaces, where the Sumbanese aesthetic invites itself in for a perfect blend of cultures.
Unforgettable culinary experiences
Gastronomy has always played a very important role at Cap Karoso, with three restaurants offering a varied, modern and high-level menu. French chef Antoine le Vacon’s ambition is to offer guests a clear cuisine that sublimates local products, adding a touch of sophistication typical of French cuisine, while being as locavore as possible. Cap Karoso also has its own organic farm where fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices and edible flowers are grown, as well as a local chicken, duck and buffalo farm. The aim is to become self-sufficient in almost all products that can be grown on site, thus reducing imports and the hotel’s carbon footprint.
A place for sharing and inspiration
Of course, it’s important to note that to experience Sumba’s local culture, it’s crucial to respect the traditions and customs of the locals. The owners of Cap Karoso have worked closely with local communities to ensure that the hotel’s development is in harmony with their way of life and beliefs. They have also created jobs for local residents and launched initiatives to promote organic farming and preserve the island’s natural environment.
Cap Karoso offers a unique experience for travelers seeking sustainability, authenticity and community, while discovering the wonders of Sumba Island. With its philosophy of sharing and encounters, the hotel invites guests to experience total immersion in the local culture and discover the island’s natural beauty. If you’re looking for a vacation destination that combines luxury, sustainability and cultural immersion, Cap Karoso is certainly an ideal choice.
