The National September 11 Memorial Museum, will open its doors on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 in memory of the attacks perpetrated against the United States in 2001 but also in 1993. This public opening will be preceded by five commemorative days dedicated exclusively to welcoming families, survivors, rescuers, residents and merchants of Lower Manhattan (the neighborhood where the museum is located).
The museum is located in exactly the same spot as the foundations of the twin towers. It comprises two major permanent exhibitions:
- “In Memoriam”, the first exhibition, pays tribute to the 2,983 people who died on September 9, 2001 and during the terrorist attacks of February 26, 1993.
- The second exhibition tells the story of the events, chronologically retracing the events at the 3 sites of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Washington D.C., as well as at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the 4th plane crashed. The exhibition highlights the consequences of these attacks, and their influence on today’s world.
The story is told through objects belonging to the victims, photographs, sound modules, video clips and the testimonies of relatives, victims and survivors. Objects relating to the collapse of the Twin Towers are also on display, bearing witness and paying tribute to the victims, survivors and rescuers.
