Photographer Joséphine Douet lives and works between Madrid and Paris. Her work has been published in numerous magazines (Rolling Stone, ELLE, GQ, Vanity Fair, L’Officiel, Libération, Les Inrockuptibles, Paris Match…). She captures the life and essence of exceptional personalities, far from the official glamour, with a sensitive and magical eye that takes us farther than expected. Portraits of great jazz musicians, tour photos and years of backstage work at Haute Couture fashion shows. The first part of a trilogy on bullfighting, “PEAJES” is also a book of the same name (ed. Bellaterra). For the first time, a photographer has embarked on a journey with matador José María Manzanares and his cuadrilla, to photograph their lives, without concessions. Just another member of the team. The result of this close collaboration between two artists is a wonderful and original story. A road movie through a mysterious world of free men. Joséphine shows us a José Maria Manzanares who is a bullfighter and a traveller. His character merges with the scenery, with his working tools, with his solitude and that of his family. The poetry of his excellent photos lies in the small details: a soulless roadside hotel, the swordsman washing the lightsuit in the shower, a montera suitcase waiting, majestic and solitary, on the sidewalk of a random street in a random town, the community of bullfighters dining too quickly in an anonymous restaurant. Without effect, naturally and with the naturalness and realism of the greats. Through this subtle collection of beautiful images, Joséphine perfectly reflects the secret geography of José María Manzanares’ journey towards a summer of blood, sweat, tears and glory.
the “PEAJES” exhibition runs from April 25 to June 12, 2013 at the Hotel Jules & Jim gallery in Paris
