Since the end of 2012, renowned master perfumer Serge Lutens has been offering us an eagerly-awaited new product: Le Vaporisateur Tout Noir, and here’s its presentation.
THE ALL-BLACK SPRAY BOTTLE
1°) Serge Lutens, this year you’re offering “Le vaporisateur tout noir” (The all-black spray) and, at first glance, it’s reminiscent of the “Nombre noir” spray you created in 1982.
What do you think?
With the perfume “Nombre noir”, I introduced black on black, followed by tone on tone, in 1980 – because that’s precisely when it was conceived. It was also the only time a brand didn’t put its signature or logo on the packaging. This spray bottle, in fact, was devoid of anything other than black. It was up to the user to decide what he wanted it to be.
When the idea of a “Serge Lutens” vaporizer came up, I didn’t see the point in rethinking an object that, once and for all, had been designed, or should I say, intended. All I had to do was make it suitable for pocket or other transport.
2°) The “Vaporisateur tout noir” case seems to break away from the traditional codes of the Serge Lutens brand. Did you design it yourself? If so, why did you go off the beaten track?
To your first question, “traditional”… don’t know! As long as I’m alive, everything is possible, modifiable, transformable; in fact, active.
One by one, day by day, I drew letters of different sizes on loose paper. Once this alphabet had been established, and so that what I wanted to say would be legible, I laid it out on a light background. Rather than equalizing these characters, I left them in their original size, which, as with the name of the “all-black” spray bottle, provokes an almost childlike formulation. I never got out of childhood. In conclusion, I’m not aligned in any way. I
“decodes”. You have to choose: invent or produce. For me, it’s done.
3°) A weapon in the bag, that’s how you describe this vaporizer!
Why this definition?
A gun needs to be reloaded. What else but the confidence of the person using it. In order to cope with an increasingly censorious and frustrating society, we all need to defend ourselves, and what is a perfume if not a seductive detonator?
4°) This year, with this vaporizer, you offer us a choice of refills ofSultan Amber or Féminité du bois. Will there be more next year?
Of course, they replace the ephemeral editions. Just know that this vaporizer thing isn’t over yet. I’ll go further, I’ll go blacker.
