At the WPT National Series Paris satellite table

From January 10 to 14, the WPT National Series Paris takes place: a major poker tournament bringing together the best French and international players. To take part in this tournament, you need a fairly high buy-in: in this case, 1,500 euros. But there’s another way to get in on the action, by qualifying online at partypoker.fr or by playing live. In poker jargon, this is known as a satellite. In fact, it’s a moderately buy-in qualifying tournament that gives you access to the Main Event.I slipped into one of these qualifying tournaments on Wednesday January 9 at the Aviation Club de France. Here’s an account of the evening.

Located on the Champs-Elysées, the ACF offers a refined and intimate setting. I enter the premises and collect my ticket for the tournament. Many men at my table, only one woman out of 10 players. The sociology and age of the players is varied: a young 25-year-old, senior citizens and an executive in a suit. My neighbor on the right puts his headphones on but plugs in his IPhone incorrectly, revealing to the whole table that he’s listening to ….Barbara. Also at the table is an Italian with a huge accent and slicked-back hair.

The game begins and I win several moves, thanks in particular to a pair of kings. I manage to pass one or two bluffs, which gives me a nice adrenaline rush. I love poker above all for these emotions! Those little thrills that last a few moments when a player is sizing you up.A player at the table seems to have spotted a tell from one of the opponents (a hen’s ass mouth), which makes me laugh out loud. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed. I don’t hit any good cards and my stack starts to melt.Having lost 1/3 of my stack, I discover Ace/King in the middle of the hand, raise, get overraised and decide to go all-in against a pair of Aces. Aie!!! That’s what we call a bad encounter and the end of the tournament for me. That’s poker!
