In Rouen on May 9, the Maori head from the Natural History Museum will be definitively handed over to its people in a traditional ceremony
. After more than five years of ethical, scientific, political and legal debate, this will be the first
Maori head to leave French territory and return to its ancestral homeland, New Zealand, where it will be buried in accordance with
customary rites. The other restitutions, of all the Maori heads held by French museums, will take place at the beginning of
2012.
