The « Stars » of James Bort

At the invitation of Benjamin Millepied, James Bort photographed the 18 star dancers of the Opéra National de Paris. For 3 days in July 2015, he offered them to choose the costume of their favorite ballet character (Mathieu Ganio as Romeo, Dorothée Gilbert as Manon, Marie-Agnès Gillot as Eurydice, etc.):

« I wanted to see only the costume on them, without makeup or accessories, without hair. My wish was to make ressen alone, facing his mirror. » James Bort

Sublimated by intense light and blacks, these faces and bodies in motion are shown in a way that is both intimate and spectacular, where power is combined with grace.

James Bort succeeds in capturing movement and stillness to give you a glimpse of these dancers as you’ve never seen them before.
