Glenmorangie Finealta, which means « elegant » in Gaelic, is the latest addition to Glenmorangie’s Private Edition range. Pronounced » Finalta « , this new single malt is a faithful reproduction of a recipe dating back to 1903, rediscovered in the distillery’s archives.
Dr Bill LUMSDEN, Head of Distillation and Whisky Creation, comments: » Glenmorangie decided to reproduce this recipe so that we could experience the taste of this historic expression and share it with whisky lovers. We followed the recipe to the letter, marrying whiskies of different ages and cask types. The end result is an elegant whisky of such depth that we have chosen it as the second expression in Glenmorangie’s Private Edition range.
Distillery archives tell us that in the early 20th century, this Glenmorangie was served in the American Bar at the Savoy, the most prestigious of London’s Belle Époque hotels.
Daniel Baerntuther, Director of The Savoy’s American Bar, says: « We’re delighted with the re-creation of Glenmorangie Finealta, which was enjoyed by customers of The Savoy bar at the turn of the 20th century. »
Now Glenmorangie Finealta’s unique aromas can be enjoyed by connoisseurs the world over. The first nose reveals notes of vanilla and lemon, combined with the rich taste of tangerine and lime. This is followed by aromas of cherry brandy and spices: nutmeg and ginger. The finish is surprising: a hint of peat creates a subtle smokiness. Surprising as it may seem, in the early 20th century, Glenmorangie distillery dried its malt in a peat-fired kiln, hence the slight hint of smoke found…only in Finealta!
Bottled at 46%, this single malt is unchill-filtered to reveal a dense, silky texture.
Tasting notes:
ABV: 46% Unchill-filtered
Color: Deep amber
Nose: The deeply intriguing nose instantly reveals caramelized orange and liqueur-soaked peaches, sweet almonds, grapes and lime. There’s a light touch of smoky wood floating through a bouquet of roses.
Palate: The palate is succulent and rich. It first reveals aromas of tangerine and lime, cherry brandy and jam toast, combined with the spicy character of nutmeg and ginger. Powdered sugar, meringue and violets then gently reveal themselves on the palate as the taste becomes homogeneous, pure and elegant.
Finish: A fine chalky mineral bitterness with a subtle smoky taste and powdery floral aromas; a fine, rich single malt.
