The Maison du Savoir-Faire et de la Création (MSFC) chose the second option, and draws from it seven observations on the transformations under way in French garment-making — a text that stands out for its complete absence of promotional emphasis, far from the conventional talk about French excellence.

The figures, first, give the measure of the work accomplished: more than 600 French companies listed, and more than 300 introductions per year between brands and manufacturers, for turnover generated of 6 million euros for the benefit of manufacturers over the last three years. A discreet ecosystem, far from the runways and glitter of fashion, but on which the survival of many workshops scattered across French territory very concretely depends.

More revealing still: demand addressed to this sector is becoming international, with 28% of visitors to the matchmaking platform now coming from abroad. A sign that French know-how continues to exert an appeal that goes well beyond the domestic market, running counter to a sometimes overly France-centred discourse on the decline of the national textile industry — the reality, as the data reveals it, seems more nuanced than the story usually heard.

Production models are also evolving, with growing expectations regarding social and environmental responsibility, innovation and flexibility — criteria that were not necessarily central fifteen years ago, when the MSFC began observing the sector, and that today redraw the selection criteria of brands looking for a manufacturer. This shift in expectations accompanies, without necessarily preceding it, a broader transformation of the relations between ordering parties and production workshops.

This demographic question is not specific to garment-making: it runs through all the craft trades and French manual know-how, where the generation that learned the gesture in the 1970s and 1980s is now approaching retirement without its succession always being assured. By pointing to this figure plainly, the MSFC refuses the comfort of a purely celebratory discourse on Made in France, in order to remind us that excellence, without organised transmission, remains a capital that is being depleted.

Unlike the façade communication still too frequent in the luxury sector, this type of field observation, based on fifteen years of concrete matchmaking between brands and manufacturers rather than on occasionally commissioned studies, offers a rare and valuable reading of what is really at stake in the workshops, far from the runways and the editorials devoted to French know-how.

But the most worrying observation concerns transmission: one employee in four in the sector is expected to retire within the next ten years. A figure that reminds us, plainly, that French know-how is preserved not by nostalgia but by active training — and that the real urgency, behind the talk of French excellence regularly mobilised in the communication of luxury houses, remains above all demographic, raising the question of who, tomorrow, will still know how to make what France continues to sell as an argument of prestige.

Also on Luxsure: Hermès Prepares Two Creative Events for January 2027 · The French Paradox of Luxury on Credit · The Return of French Heritage Houses in the Face of Fast Fashion · Delvaux Entrusts Its Leadership to Yanina Novitskaya

After fifteen years in contact with brands and manufacturers, the Maison du Savoir-Faire et de la Création offers an unsparing assessment of French manufacturing, caught between internationalisation and the urgency of transmission.

[78988

post-2123069","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-luxury-studies
["GET
