Bonsai is an art of patience \u2014 that of shaping, year after year, a form that seems to have always existed. It is this discipline that Seiko Presage chooses to transpose into watchmaking, by teaming up with the Japanese collective TRADMAN’S BONSAI for a new limited edition. A rapprochement that extends a well-established habit of the brand: drawing on Japanese crafts far removed from watchmaking to build, dial after dial, an aesthetic vocabulary recognisable among all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piece evokes a Japanese black pine lit by the moon: a deeply textured green dial, inspired by the bark of the tree and by the traditional colour matsuba-iro, combined with elegant gold accents that recall night light settling on the needles of a centuries-old bonsai. An exercise in style that owes as much to jewellery<\/a> as to watchmaking, so much does the rendering of the texture seem to have been conceived as a miniature in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matsuba-iro green chosen for this dial belongs to a family of traditional Japanese hues named directly after natural elements \u2014 here the pine needle \u2014 rather than by a simple chromatic reference. This choice of vocabulary, inherited from Japanese textile and pictorial craftsmanship, says a great deal about the ambition of the collaboration: not merely to illustrate the bonsai, but to borrow its aesthetic language down to the name of its colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Limited to 2,000 pieces, the watch comes with an additional calfskin leather strap and a wooden presentation box specially designed for this edition \u2014 a gesture that extends, even into the presentation of the product, the aesthetics of wood and plant life summoned by the dial. It is offered at a recommended retail price of 1,400 euros. The choice of a wooden box rather than the more classic materials of the watch sector extends, down to the last detail of the presentation, the coherence of this collaboration: even the object meant to store the watch continues to tell the story of the bonsai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association with TRADMAN’S BONSAI, a collective dedicated to passing on this ancestral art, is part of a well-established tradition at Seiko Presage<\/a>: that of drawing on Japanese artisanal know-how \u2014 lacquer, enamel, weaving \u2014 to dress its dials in a vocabulary that goes beyond mechanics alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, a bonsai, by its very nature, is shaped over several decades. A watch is worn from the first day. The contrast between these two temporalities \u2014 the immediate one of series-produced watchmaking and the patient one of the art evoked \u2014 is perhaps the most interesting thing this collaboration says. It invites, implicitly, to consider the watch itself as an object that might, over the years and with daily wear, develop its own patina \u2014 a way of bringing series-produced watchmaking closer, even modestly, to the patient discipline it celebrates \u2014 and of giving added meaning to the gesture, also daily, of winding or adjusting one’s watch each morning, as one would care, on one’s modest scale, for a tree one will never see reach its final form, and whose beauty lies precisely in the fact that the work on it never really stops \u2014 a lesson in patience that a dial, however carefully made, can ultimately only suggest from afar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
