Scalapay’s data for 2025 describe a far more radical structure: consumption massively concentrated on fast fashion, while the mid-range fades and luxury recomposes itself around clothing.

This imbalance deserves to be read less as a passing anomaly than as the symptom of a market in which split payment becomes an instrument of cultural arbitrage.

In 2025, 87% of the fashion purchases observed by Scalapay in France were fast fashion, against 79% a year earlier. The mid-range falls to 9%, where it still holds 20% in Italy and 12% in Spain. Premium, for its part, remains limited to 2%.

This polarisation does not mean, however, that French consumers spend less. The average fast fashion basket reaches 118 euros, against 79 euros in Italy and 92 euros in Spain. On shoes and sneakers, France also posts the highest basket of the panel, at 149 euros. In other words, fast consumption is not necessarily minimal consumption: it can aggregate several pieces, speed up purchase frequency or shift towards accessible retailers a budget once captured by the mid-range.

French luxury presents another singularity. 60% of the luxury purchases recorded concern clothing, against 44% in Italy and 16% in Spain. Jewellery rises from 7 to 13% in a year, while sneakers account for 24%, far from the 64% observed in Spain. Clothing therefore retains in France a strong status-bearing and cultural function, where other markets favour more immediately identifiable objects.

The generational profile sheds light on this dynamic. Those aged 25 to 34 represent 35.4% of French Scalapay users. Those aged 18 to 24 account for 23.2%. The core of the market is therefore not only young: it is already settled in split-payment practices that make porous the border between immediate desire and budgetary capacity.

The clearest specificity lies in the means of payment. In France, 95% of BNPL transactions go through a debit card, against 5% by credit card and none by prepaid card. This model differs profoundly from Italy and Spain, where prepaid dominates. French split payment appears less as an extension of traditional credit than as a layer added to the current account.

For the Houses, the point is not to confuse this ease of payment with a mechanical democratisation of luxury. It is rather to understand how a generation arbitrates between volume, desirability and rarity. The disappearance of the mid-range could strengthen the symbolic value of the Houses, but it may also weaken the bridges that once led gradually towards them.

The French market thus enters a phase in which luxury is no longer measured only by the price of the object, but by the way its acquisition fits into a fragmented budget. This transformation requires the Houses to observe financial uses as much as aesthetic codes.

Also on Luxsure: Fast fashion is losing momentum · Fashion’s ecological turn: here and now? · Waiting to be worn: Agnès B.
