There is a delicious paradox in the story IWC Schaffhausen tells as it celebrates 50 years of the Ingenieur SL: the house pays tribute to a watch that, when it was launched, did not find the commercial success expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1976, IWC introduced the Ingenieur SL, reference 1832, created by designer G\u00e9rald Genta<\/a> at the height of his creative period in the 1970s, a decade in which steel sports watches with integrated bracelets were establishing themselves as a category in their own right in Swiss watchmaking. Despite an aesthetic ahead of its time, the Ingenieur SL did not immediately find its audience: between 1976 and 1983, only 598 examples were produced. It would take several decades for collectors to rediscover the piece, now regarded as one of the most sought-after models in the house’s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is this reference 1832 that served as the blueprint for the modern Ingenieur, relaunched in 2023. Its bezel held by five functional screws, its grid-patterned dial and its integrated bracelet take up the visual codes of the Ingenieur SL, while adding more refined ergonomics and finishing. To mark this half-century, IWC unveils two limited editions of the Ingenieur Automatic, available in 40 and 35 millimetres, each limited to 1,150 pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both watches stand out with a brushed silver dial, inspired by a rare variant of the 1970s Ingenieur SL: while reference 1832 is best known for its grid-patterned dial, IWC also produced a version with a silver dial and a brushed finish, which remained more confidential. One further detail marks the anniversary: the small lightning bolt that usually appears beneath the name “Ingenieur” has been replaced by the number “50”. \u201cFifty years have passed since my father created the Ingenieur SL, and I am still amazed to see how much his work continues to inspire so many people decades later,\u201d says Alexia Genta, daughter of G\u00e9rald Genta and co-founder of the G\u00e9rald Genta Heritage Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the technical side, the 40 mm model is fitted with the manufacture calibre 32111, equipped with a double-pawl winding system that provides a 120-hour power reserve, protected by a soft-iron inner cage as on the original Ingenieur SL. The 35 mm model reveals, through a sapphire case back, the calibre 47110, adorned with Geneva stripes and a gold-plated rotor. \u201cWith its distinctive and bold design, the Ingenieur SL shaped both G\u00e9rald Genta’s career and the history of IWC Schaffhausen,\u201d sums up Christian Knoop, the house’s creative director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gesture sums up fairly well what contemporary watchmaking does best with its own archives: turning a commercial failure into an aesthetic matrix, provided it is given the time to find, several decades later, the audience able to read it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
