A blue-green dial called Pool joins the Ingenieur Automatic 35 collection at IWC Schaffhausen. Behind this seemingly harmless colour choice lies a broader contest: that of a long-austere watchmaking tradition learning, with caution, to speak the language of summer and pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ingenieur has never been an easy watch. Designed in 1976 by G\u00e9rald Genta \u2014 the same man behind Audemars Piguet\u2019s Royal Oak and Patek Philippe\u2019s Nautilus \u2014 it belongs to that generation of steel sports watches with integrated bracelets that invented, in the 1970s, a new relationship with luxury: less ostentatious, more architectural, resolutely masculine in its original codes. Fifty years on, IWC<\/a> chooses to set this heritage in dialogue with a shade that has nothing of the engineer about it: Pool, an aquatic blue-green, almost playful, which evokes the infinity pool more than the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice is not insignificant in the wider context of contemporary watchmaking. For several seasons, Swiss houses have been loosening palettes historically dominated by black, silver and midnight blue, in favour of pastel or saturated shades borrowed from the lifestyle world \u2014 mint green, powder pink, and now this pool blue. It is a way of answering a clientele that buys a watch less and less for its function alone, and more and more for what it says about a way of life. On the Ingenieur, Pool works as a signal: that of a piece of pure engineering that allows itself, for the span of one reference, to become a summer accessory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the technical side, nothing changes in the house\u2019s usual standard. The 35-millimetre stainless steel case, the integrated bracelet, the dial\u2019s characteristic \u201cGrid\u201d pattern, the applied indexes treated with Super-LumiNova: everything that makes up the Ingenieur\u2019s identity stays in place. Calibre 47110, visible through a sapphire case back, offers 42 hours of power reserve and classic decoration \u2014 Geneva stripes and a gold-plated rotor. It is precisely this continuity that makes the chromatic gesture easier to read: IWC is not reinventing the watch, it is changing its mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, this launch completes a larger puzzle. With this Pool reference, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 collection now numbers six models \u2014 from the sober silver dial to a case entirely in 5N gold set with diamonds, by way of a deep blue version. This multiplication of variants in a compact format, closer to a woman\u2019s wrist than the historic Ingenieur, outlines a clear strategy: to turn this model, born for engineers, into a complete wardrobe, able to follow a younger and more mixed clientele through the seasons rather than remain fixed in a single identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the anecdote of a shade, then, lies a fundamental question for steel sports watchmaking: how far can a design born of rigour be softened without dissolving its aura? IWC is betting that colour alone is enough to move an icon forward without betraying it. Pool is neither a provocation nor a revolution \u2014 it is a full-scale test of the ability of a 1970s archetype to reinvent itself without losing its backbone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
