For its twentieth anniversary, Etat Libre d\u2019Orange chooses not to celebrate its own history. The House looks much further back, towards Uruk and the Epic of Gilgamesh. *Uruk Chronicles*, signed by perfumer Jordi Fernandez at Givaudan, turns a four-thousand-year-old tale into olfactory architecture. The exercise could easily slide into cultural window-dressing; it becomes more interesting when one observes how the perfume actually organises this passage from the solar to the mineral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The composition is built like a journey. At the top, strawberry, mandarin and Ebelia set up a deliberately fruity opening. The heart brings out a saffron accord, iris and Pomarose. The base darkens with cypriol, cedar and tonka. This progression serves the Gilgamesh story: the initial abundance and power give way to a graver quest, confronted with mortality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mesopotamian reference continues in the bottle. The label borrows signs inspired by Sumero-Akkadian cuneiform tablets and ancient frescoes. The deep green chosen for the glass evokes less an archaeological reconstruction than an idea of fertile territory, between sacred forests and river valleys. The design thus embraces a share of imagination: it does not claim to reproduce Uruk, but to fashion a contemporary fragment of memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where the Object goes beyond the simple theme. Since its creation in Paris in 2006, Etat Libre d\u2019Orange<\/a> has often used perfumery<\/a> as a narrative medium. Here, the perfume does not merely christen a scent with an ancient name; it mobilises an identified perfumer, a legible olfactory structure and packaging consistent with the story. *Uruk Chronicles* joins the Orange Extraordinaire collection, in a 100-millilitre bottle priced at 245 euros, with a release announced for September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A broader question remains. As niche perfumery multiplies historical, mythological and artistic references, the boundary between cultural depth and learned decor becomes more demanding. *Uruk Chronicles* has in its favour a construction precise enough to avoid mere stylistic exercise. But its reach will also depend on what the House chooses to document: the materials, their origins, the technical formulation choices and the way Jordi Fernandez translated this story into proportions rather than symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfume is perhaps one of the few luxury Objects capable of making an era felt without claiming to restore it. Yet the imaginary must still be sustained by the material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
