From this piece, dunhill takes a construction detail rather than a decoration: the rounded base corners, originally designed to protect the trunk from knocks during transport by car, which already balanced sturdiness and elegant proportions. This vocabulary now reappears across a whole family of silhouettes — from the tote to the holdall, by way of the valet trunk and the cabin bag.

A house born with the automobile

This return to the automobile is not a theme imported from outside for dunhill. The House was born in 1893 from the accessories for motorists sold by Alfred Dunhill, at a time when the car was still a novelty requiring a whole kit, before becoming, a few decades later, a house of tailoring and leather goods in its own right. Century therefore does not cite a theme external to the House: it returns to its starting point.

A stitch borrowed from the steering wheel

The most documented detail of the collection concerns the handles, shaped with a cross stitch that the House calls the steering wheel stitch — a sewing technique directly inspired by the leather-wrapped steering wheels of the early twentieth century, shaped to fit the grip naturally. Side leather straps, also inherited from the accompanying luggage historically designed to escort trunks, allow the silhouette to shift from a compact format to a more relaxed look.

Hardware as a signature

dunhill has developed exclusive hardware for Century, with a padlock, a cylindrical tag holder — the Rolla-tag — and an engravable monogram plate, all finished with the House’s Reed motif. Their proportions are inspired by another archive object: the Unique lighter, introduced in 1924. The chosen finish, a polished vintage palladium, closes the loop between the automobile, travel and the silversmithing that dunhill has practised for over a century.

DETAIL — the Century collection is offered in fine-patina calfskin, in three colours: chocolate, tan and black. The House states that the leather develops a patina specific to each use, without communicating any production lead time or number of pieces.

A gesture shared by the travel houses

dunhill is not alone in revisiting its original trunks. Louis Vuitton and Hermès have long drawn on their own travel trunk archives to feed their contemporary leather goods lines, an exercise that consists less in copying an old model than in extracting a construction detail able to justify, today, an entirely new piece. Century applies this method with a narrowed entry point: a single detail — the rounded corner of 1914 — extended across a whole family of silhouettes rather than a faithful reproduction of an archive model.

Leather goods occupy a central place in dunhill’s proposition, alongside tailoring and men’s jewellery pieces, within an offer the House has built for over one hundred and thirty years around the same client: a man who travels.

It remains to be seen whether this patina, designed to settle in over time, will survive the exposure of a collection that, for its part, must renew itself every season.

Second chapter of the Heritage in Motion series, dunhill’s Century collection starts from a motoring trunk designed by the House more than a hundred years ago to build a contemporary leather goods line.

[52709,30776

post-2115315","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mode-luxsure-en","category-mode-en
["GET
