Some brands never really die; they wait. Thirty-six years after it closed, Le Garage is being reborn under Adrien Albou, artistic director of Paul & Joe’s menswear line, who is relaunching the house his grandparents founded in 1984 with a first collection titled Héritage Psyché.

The story of Le Garage belongs to the fashion memory of the 1980s, which few labels have kept alive for so long without ever truly returning. Founded in 1984, the house had made its name with unisex-cut shirts, designed for a wardrobe neither quite masculine nor quite feminine, and with prints drawn directly from modern art. Worn by figures as different as David Bowie, Prince and Madonna, the brand had enjoyed a reach well beyond France before closing in 1990, as houses too far ahead of their time so often do.

It is this specific legacy that Adrien Albou has chosen to revive, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of Paul & Joe, the house founded by his mother. The move goes well beyond the usual exercise in heritage relaunches: Albou is not inheriting a licence bought from a third-party house but relaunching the family company of his own grandparents, with his mother’s full agreement, in a single act of generational transmission. Before reaching this point, the designer had founded his own brand, Garçons Infidèles, then served as artistic director of IRO Homme, where he refined his sense of silhouette before joining Paul & Joe to move, quite literally, closer to the family business.

Héritage Psyché, the first ready-to-wear collection of this rebirth, does not seek to reproduce the wardrobe of the 1980s identically. Albou reinterprets the house’s DNA through sophisticated silhouettes combining tailoring, Italian denim, knitwear and structured coats, in which Parisian elegance converses with an openly acknowledged artistic heritage. The exclusive prints, produced in Como, the historic cradle of Italian silk, and manufacturing carried out entirely in Paris, extend the original spirit of the house without ever giving way to pure nostalgic quotation: the clothing remains resolutely contemporary, even if each motif seems to bear the trace of a specific family memory.

This kind of relaunch, initiated not by a luxury group but by a direct heir, remains rare in an industry where nostalgia for the 1980s and 1990s is most often monetised through licences bought at a high price by conglomerates seeking heritage to exploit. At Le Garage the logic is reversed: transmission precedes commercial strategy, and family heritage becomes the raw material of a collection before it is a marketing argument. The parallel with Adrien Albou’s career, as the founder of the Japanese restaurant Hando in Paris, also says something about his way of working: a constant fascination with the transmission of know-how, whether textile or culinary.

It remains to be seen whether the wardrobe of a house that stopped in 1990 can find, in 2026, an audience many of whom never knew its original shirts. But in choosing to relaunch Le Garage as a direct tribute to his grandparents rather than as a mere marketing move, Adrien Albou is betting that the sincerity of a family story will, in the end, weigh more than nostalgia alone.
