No Spanish designer had, before this week, presented a show on the roof of Rockefeller Center. Custo Barcelona, a Catalan house, has just filled that absence by presenting “Unexpected”, its new spring-summer 2026-2027 collection, during New York Fashion Week.

The choice of venue is not insignificant. By setting up on one of the most recognisable rooftops of the New York skyline, Custo Barcelona reasserts a relationship with the city that goes beyond the mere Fashion Week calendar: New York holds, in the brand’s international trajectory, a place that the press release describes as foundational. This return to the New York runway, from an enclave never before occupied by a Spanish designer, thus works as a statement as much as a show.

“Unexpected” takes the unexpected as the starting point of a collection that claims identity, energy and creative freedom. True to the house’s DNA, it combines craftsmanship and innovation through fluid silhouettes, sheer fabrics, ruffles, lace and gauzy materials. Pastel tones and earth shades mingle with luminous reflections, patchworks, layering and embroidered details, for an aesthetic that the brand describes as contemporary, sensual and architectural, a collection conceived, in its own words, as a celebration of individuality and self-expression.

The images and video of the show bear the signature of photographer Guillem Broglia, a choice that underlines the importance the house places on the visual documentation of this event, beyond the show itself.

For several seasons, New York Fashion Week has multiplied unexpected venues to host shows, from rooftops to converted former industrial warehouses. But Rockefeller Center holds a place apart in this inventory of emblematic venues: an architectural symbol of New York Art Deco, it did not until now belong to fashion’s usual vocabulary, which makes it all the more significant that no Spanish designer had ever presented a collection there before Custo Barcelona.

The aesthetic vocabulary deployed in “Unexpected” (fluid silhouettes, sheer fabrics, lace, patchworks and embroidery) follows on from the language the Catalan house has built over its previous collections, rather than a break conceived for the occasion. This is perhaps what makes the choice of venue all the stronger: the collection itself does not seek to impress by the novelty of its vocabulary, but by the gap between its usual, rather intimate universe and the monumentality of the site chosen to present it.

The term “regresa” used by the house to describe this return to New York suggests a prior absence whose length the press release does not specify. This choice of vocabulary, between the lines, perhaps says more about the value the Catalan house places on this stage than the description of the collection itself: a return is celebrated with such brilliance only when the absence that preceded it mattered.

There is something deliberately circular in this presentation: a collection that makes the unexpected a creative principle, shown from a place where Spanish fashion had never yet been seen on the runway. It remains to be seen whether this “first” will remain a one-off communication fact, or the sign of a more regular presence of the Catalan house on the rooftops of Manhattan, in every sense of the term.
